    Completed Colorized Photo

This is the one I was working on. I'm quite happy with it. I used GIMP to do the colorizing, and then PS to remove the background and insert a new one.

Thank you very much, Donald! This is such a rewarding pastime. There's really nothing to it.

I watched your tutorial using Photoshop, that was great. Can you do one for gimp too?

Indeed, I could. However, until I do, I might suggest giving it a try, as the process in Photoshop is very nearly the same.

    Re: Completed Colorized Photo

I recently bought a Wacom Intuous tablet and with it came a copy of Adobe Photoshop Elements 11. I figured since it was similar to Photoshop, I'd try to see if I could use it to colorize photos. As below, you can see it is possible and well too. It's not my best work, just more of a proof of concept.

    Have a guess :)

    Re: Completed Colorized Photo

Would be a good topic for a "colouring competition".

Thank you! Yes, I think it would be cool! I know it's not photography, per se, but it is an art form in some ways.

That really is excellent work Jim, the skin tones in particular. I must dig out my tablet.

    Re: Completed Colorized Photo

Here's a more detailed project I'm working on. It's public domain (I make sure not to use copywritten images) and a WIP. I wanted to challenge myself and work on an image with more detail. I like where it's going, but the most difficult thing is figuring out what the colors should be. I've guessed most of them based on their shade (blue would be darker than beige for example and colors were not overly bright or plentiful in those days, so mostly blues and greys for the shirts and the one jacket, and then the beige for the others since the shade was pretty light on their clothes). The most difficult parts will be the ground and the trees. C&C are welcome. Any insight to the colors would be helpful.

Hi Jim,it is superbI would leave it without colorizing the trees and the ground. One of the tire rims is colorized and the other one is not,so I think you have to make a decision about which one to choose ( I would choose not coloured). There is a black stain at the top middle of the image,I think it is better to clone it.

    Re: Completed Colorized Photo

Well, it's a work in progress, so, I hadn't gotten to the other rim yet. I'm going to colorize the entire image, but your suggestions are interesting.
