It was in our living room, which has good natural light. In this case, the afternoon sun was coming from windows to my right, but not directly reaching the sofa where my granddaughter was holding the pup. There was enough light for an exposure at ISO 400, but I wanted to fill the shadows yet avoid the pinpoint eye reflection one often gets with fill flash. So I reduced the 420EX flash on my Canon 30D by one stop, and bounced it off the white wall behind me and the arched ceiling above. That filled the shadows without being an obvious fill-flash shot. EXIF data, if I remember, showed f7.1 (!) 1/60th sec.
