5.6 is not compatible with CS3. I was waiting to upgrade to CS5. I was wondering if you thought I calculated aperture correctly at f/4.5. Wires above camera were about 60' and first tower was @ about 120'. Focus was on 1st tower at the top. Sometimes with these foreshortened views the calculation can be tricky and knock the whole frame OOF. Thx.

I was surprised at that aperture, but have no idea how we would know if it were wrong.

I believe 5.6 is compatible with CS3, but you have to look quite hard to find that confirmation.
I bet if you followed the instructions carefully (including keeping the old files so you can reverse out if I am wrong), you will find it works. I think the NR is better on 5.x from 4.x.

If CS5 is close by, I guess you could wait ...

According to the CiC tutorial calculator - assuming a largest print dimension of 16 inches you would start to get diffraction problems above f8 on an 18MP sensor (that is larger f numbers as in smaller physical apertures) - maybe not ideal for landscape photography but might be worth a try just to see if it's a factor.
The other thing that I have read is some raw converters do a better job with the 7d than others but I can't remember which ones were thought to be better, oddly the canon dpp(?) wasn't one of the good ones but I thought ACR was better. You should check that you are using the latest version of ACR because I have also read somewhere that the earlier versions weren't as good either, it's still quite a new camera so would also be well worth checking that you have the latest firmware on the camera itself (I know that Canon have released fixes for image problems but I think that was ghosting) and check all other software in the pp chain for version, I would expect there to be improvements as the software programmers gain experience with it.
If you really can't put up with the soft images then contact Canon customer service and send it back for calibration I've heard that Canon support if very good so definitely call them.

I really appreciate all the comments and I am definitely going to follow up on all suggestions and thoughts. Dave, ACR 5.6 definitely won't work with CS3. I may have to upgrade now. Thx., Colin for sharpening advise and am definitely going to work on all that.

I would be interested in getting opinions as to what equipment/settings it took to get this shot: Wouldn't there be an incredible amount of noise? What shutter/ISO speeds? I describe the shot as

seagulls taking flight before a small coastal farm in Iceland

and it is third from left in slideshow. Thx. for comments.

Alas, it seems you are indeed correct, they have also stopped support for my Elements 6 at ACR 5.5
