Both crops work well for me though I like the tighter crop a little bit better. (That's almost always the case for me.)

I'm not an expert in portraiture but I do have a fondness for informal portraits such as this one. So, I did the following:

1) Applied a stronger S-curve to the entire image.
2) Added brightness and contrast to the eyes.
3) Brightened the teeth.
4) Darkened the overall skin tone.
5) Removed the remaining hot spot on the forehead.
6) Didn't deal with the lack of blue on his left shoulder but would if I wanted to perfect the shot.
7) Didn't deal with the two catch lights in his left eye but I would remove the smaller one if I wanted to perfect it. (Something is creating a rectangular catch light in both eyes that looks abnormal to me, so you could attend to that as well.)

Let me know if you want me to post the results of my very quick treatment.

I much prefer the 2nd crop, Bruce. The first one is 'Terry in the garden' but the second one is 'Terry'.
