Yes, I take quite a lot of shots like this, which are fine for identification purposes if (more likely when) it flies off as I am attempting to position myself for a better view of its face.
Always a lot of failures before I find a compliant model !
Sometimes I spend days, or longer, without getting what I want; but luckily there are always other species of insect to photograph instead.
I never managed one successful photo of an Orange Tip this year, even though one landed on my lens! I didn't get any Brimstones until August, and they were regularly flying around me as well. Only a couple of partial successes with any species of Fritillary.
Focus and exposure are fine here.
I came across the posts in the wrong order. Nice focus on the wings and buds. Perseverance and a bit of luck is needed to get that ideal composition.
Hi Brian,if only you had achieved the same focus on the second image as the first the face would have been perfect! but thats close up photography for youkeep at it
