I was thinking of Donald
It's true. I was thinking of Donald as I drove past this tree at 100km per hour, when I reversed course to get back to it (that's surely what he would have done), when I walked down the hillside to find a better vantage point and as I released the shutter. Naturally, you can't think of Donald without also thinking in black-and-white the entire time.
This is my first photo of this style, so I don't expect that it matches the stuff that Donald would bring to life. It's only one of two photos that I can think of that I was grateful for haze in the background; in this case it smoothed out background features that would have been distracting and in so doing helped emphasize the magnificent subject. It was nothing short of intoxicating to see this tree in the late afternoon side light and to do my best (within my limited experience) at making the photo.
Please feel free to let me know how to improve it, though I have no questions to ask about that.
If anyone knows the name of the tree, which is everywhere I went in South Africa, I would be grateful for that also.

Re: I was thinking of Donald
I am flattered and honoured by that compliment. Thank you, Mike.
I'll be interested to read what other folks think of the image.
I think my record for turning back was about 5 miles. I passed a scene in the Haute Beaujolais area of France and it bugged me until Sheila, my partner, said 'Oh for goodness sake, turn around and go back' So I did. And this was the result.

Re: I was thinking of Donald
Mike, I like it a lot. It almost has a print quality to it.

Re: I was thinking of Donald
I like this shot, though I do wonder if the left side of the tree trunk could be toned down a little as I find it a bit distracting.

Re: I was thinking of Donald
Thank you, everyone!
George, I like your idea about toning down the bright area on the trunk. Perhaps the revision shown below works better for you.
