    Canon SX40 to 60d

    Hello Everyone,

This is my first thread here

Hitting it straight. I own Canon SX40 since last April. I gained a lot about photography and tried all those things with my camera.
Now I feel like I am done with this camera and I wanna switch over to dSLR.
After a tons of reviews and comments over the past couple of months, I am planning to buy Canon 60d. It feels perfect in my hands and I kinda liked it.
and I am planned for Tamron 17-50mm (non VC), Canon 40mm pancake and Canon 70-300mm IS USM (which I'm getting for 350 usd which comes along with 60d body).

I feel I have chosen the right gear for my passion. I expect some suggestion on my gear.

    Thanks,,
    Charan

Frist of all welcome to CiC glad to have you. There nothing to dis-like about the 60d I'm sure you will be very happy with it just take your time to understand it and enjoy! For $350 I would say your buying used so be careful but that's a good price for it all.

That setup should serve you well for several years. My 60D has 85,000 shutter actuations under its belt, and has come back from the dead after water intrusion (blatant risk on my part). It's a tough, capable little camera. I'd look at the 70D if you're planning to shoot a lot of action, and if you can afford it. But realistically, you will not regret buying a 60D.

If you want to save some money, you could probably hold off on the telephoto lens. A 17-50mm f2.8 and an inexpensive prime make great place to start. You may find the 70-300mm's tight aperture infuriating (sold mine). It's basically a daylight-only lens. But if that's okay, it'll serve you well. I'm pretty much a low-light shooter, and if I need a lens longer than a 160mm full-frame equivalent (longest I own at the moment), I move closer.

@Melkus: I don't think the 300mm lens is used. Bestbuy, Adorama and BH Photo has this lens for $300 savings for this beauty. I hope it would be first hand

@RustBeltRaw: Thank you. I can't afford either 70D or a larger aperture'd telephoto. And i won't be using a telephoto in low light. I hope 40mm pancake takes care of that. Waiting to get my hands on my gear

Sorry I mis-read your post and yes that's a very good price for a new 70-300 lens

I would suggest the difference between f/2.8 and whatever aperture the 17-50 is at 40mm is hardly worth worrying about Though it seems there is no difference aperture-wise which if so makes it redundant apart from considerations between prime and zoom lenses and the money better spent getting a similar Canon short zoom to the Tamron.

Yes. A week back, I thought the same. I aint getting the 40mm pancake now. I would save some more bucks and I'm planning to get 85mm 1.8 after some months. I feel that's a pretty move.

The 40mm would be good, low-profile lens for street shooting. Small size makes it easy to smuggle a darn good camera into events. The 85mm, on crop, will be a great portrait lens. I have its 100mm f2.0 brother, and it's my favorite lens.

Whoops, I did not read your last post before I wrote his...

I would consider the 40mm pancake as redundant when you own a 17-50mm f/2.8 Tamron. Additionally, I don't like the 40mm focal length on the crop format because the 64mm equivalent is neither "fish nor fowl", not a wide angle, not quite normal and certainly not long enough for telephoto use (including portraits). You don't add any extra capability since the pancake is a f/2.8 lens as is the Tamron.

I purchased a 40mm pancake a while ago when Canon had a great sale on refurbished models of this lens. It was an impulse buy and I have relegated the lens to my old Canon 30D camera which I keep in a small bag, alomg with my 270EX flash for use at dog rescue events and to shoot the adoptive families with their new dogs for our rescue newsletter.

I don't know about the 60D but, the 40mm pancake is great for focusing when shooting video with a T4i but, the 40mm focal length would drive me crazy in video shooting...

The 85mm f/1.8 is a nice lens but, I would seriously consider purchasing a flash (like the 430ex ii) insead of the 85mm lens.
