Lens advice - Canon 24-105mm f/4l
Hi there,
I am looking to invest in a new lens for my Canon 7D. I have a 50mm 1.4 which I love using. I recently got the canon EF 17-55mm 2.8 which I also think is quite nice. And I have the kit lens that came with my camera (28-135mm) which I got a lot of use out of but now I rarely use because of the other two lenses that I have. Now I am looking for with a longer focal length and mainly used for portraits. And I would love to have an L glass lens. Everyone says how amazing the canon 70-200mm f/2.8L IS II is but I am moving to Peru for 7 months and am worried that lens might cause a lot of attention. But I am worried I would be missing out if I didn't get it! I really like shooting with my prime that I already have so I was maybe thinking of the canon 135mm f/2L but might be a little tight on my crop body. I'm also thinking about the canon 85mm f/1.2L. I would love to hear your input! Thank you!!

Re: Lens advice - Canon 24-105mm f/4l
I have the 24-104 which I use mostly with my 5DII, but not so much with my older 30D. I usually pair the 30D and the 17-55.
The 24-105 is a very nice lens (it focuses quickly and the IS is very good), but since you already have the range covered to 135 (effectively 216 mm on the crop body), I would suggest the 70-200 Mark II. I have the previous version and it took me a while to become familiar with it, but I would not part with it now. In fact on a recent trip to Europe, I took the 70-200 and am glad I did (in spite of its weight).
While the 70-200 is a bit conspicuous, it has great "reach" making it useful for street shots (as long as you're careful and quick). A option with this lens is to put camouflage on it - the white is a bit bright.

Re: Lens advice - Canon 24-105mm f/4l
Hi Kate, i think thats your name? please go back to settings and update then we will know who we are talking to now lenses,i have the 70-200 mk1 its a fantastic lens, great for portraits too.
The 85 f1.2l is also a great lens but is very hard to use at 1.2 and thats the reason i would be buying it for the 1.2 bokeh, the auto focus is also very slow (not really a prob for portraits) The 85 f1.8 is a much better choice and if you like it then consider the 1.2,i'm no expert but hope this helps
Cheers David

There is a similar thread, by the same member, running here in respect of the Canon 70-200 f2.8L. I suggest that the two can be 'paired' so that people do not have to write the same things twice.
