    Mini Competition #63

    Here's how it works ...

    - You good folks post images in the thread (please change your post title to a name for your picture)

    - When we get 10 images we will attach a voting poll

    - After 3 days the poll closes and the winner is declared!

    - If you would especially like some critique after the competition poll closes, please make it known in the post

    Too easy eh?

Limit of 1 image per post, and 2 image posts per person.

If there are already 10 in the current comp, please start a new thread in this forum

    Gum Nuts ... for Dave!
Focused on the 'centre nut' but I've lost a bit of sharpness in my efforts to 'get it to Cambridge'. The ragged edge shadow at bottom right is from the focused 'nut'.

    Nice shot, RonH.
What have you used for the white background. Is it something like this? Light tent

PS:- Sorry, if its not ok to post an external link.

    Power of Ocean

Here is my entry: Power of Ocean

This photo was taken on 9 Jan early morning, just before the sun came out of the horizon. It took me a while to get the wave trace that I liked.

Thanks for your comment Sahil and the web link. I used something very basic ... a few sheets of photocopy paper and a good strong light angled to catch the shadow/s. I then used the Magic Eraser** in Elements8 to clean up the background.
I need to work on 'sharpening' so that I can show on Cambridge a true reflection of what is on my pc.

** Had another look at very large scale ... Magic Eraser did not do a very clean job so I have done a bit more work on the background and some more attempts at sharpening.

    Monarch of the Glen?

    Mini Competition #63

When I saw this sheep on the coast path, I thought about a parody of Landseer's famous painting. Not really sure about the colour though?

Remarkable job done, by the KID, who stayed that still for 1.5 seconds.

    @ Hans,

    Hi Hans,

Nice shot - but you've over-done the high-frequency sharpening. If you can tell me what settings you used I might be able to help with the next one. Was the original shot RAW?

    You got it

The light is good, mate, but the heat that comes with it is not so great! have to wait 'till almost dark and the temp comes down below 40C before I can manage to drag myself outside

    Thanks Colin,

I shot in RAW. I use Capture NX2 (nikon's). It allows a minimum radius of 1. I tried to play around with it and started applying 100% at a radius of 1, (threshold 0%) then reapplying another round at the same. Unfortunately it basically means I end up with 200% at a radius of 2 (which is probably too much radius though this was designed to give me sharp prints on glossy photo paper).

I then resized to 1000X700px and did it again at 100% and radius of one. As you said, too much...

But I've been fooling around again and I have been only using the USM once at 100%, radius of 1 and then playing with the opacity blending mode in USM on "overlay" and moving the Chrominance channel to 0 and the Luminance channel to around 25% which I think gives better results (though not even sure if this is affecting actual sharpness). I've uploaded these second settings so you could compare. I've also resized to 1000x700 and applied sharpening again at 50% and radius of 1. I'm just shooting in the dark here ...what do you reckon about his one (bit too soft? maybe not really in focus either):

OUCH, I think you're never going to do it easily with something that sharpens at that coarse a radius.

    You don't have anything else?
I'd recommend Elements for, I would guess, around a hundred AU$, but I think GIMP would do for free.

    Cheers,
