    Barn C&C welcome

I have been waiting for the crop to be taken off so I could get to this old barn without trampling the wheat.

This is taken just at dawn so the light is quite red. Any comment welcome

I will be gone for four days and may not be able to get to a computer, just in case people think I am ignoring any response

    Black and white

I like this a lot and wonder if I would like a great increase in the texture of the wood.

Tried to upload the colour, Tiny pics is doing it's usual erratic refusal to accept my image. May be when I get back

When I get back from Edmonton I will get out there with a wire brush and see what I can do.

    Too funny, Trevor!

Sorry to learn that you're having trouble using Tiny Pics, as I don't remember ever experiencing an issue.

    Thanks to everyone who responded.

Mike I suspect the problem with TinyPic is the the intermittent slow upload speed from my computer; due to a satellite link rather than broadband via wire. The site must timeout and drop me .

And as promised to Andre here is the colour version

    Trevor,

For me there is no question as to which is my preferred image, the colour. The B&W does not do justice to the wood, but I'm a wood colour, grain and texture fetish.

    Hi Trevor,

In my opinion much better in colour.

Since I installed ACDSee on my computer I have developed a really bad habit of downloading images I like and fiddle around with it. This one has made the grade. (After fiddling I delete them from my computer.)

Now I have to inform you sir, if you tilt the barn slightly to the left it looks more level. There is plenty you can do with this image as it is a good image to enhance.

    Love it!

Trevor, I like them both, the bw doesn't demonstrate the nuances of the colour obviously and I like contrasty BW any ways.
The cropping is a tad close for me but thats just Ned. Don't you just love that red light!
    Regards
    Ned

I prefer the colour version as well. I am playing with these images of old barns and trying to get a feel for black and white and the conversion. I am so enthralled by the colour of the weathered wood that it is a bit of a struggle to see if if there is any merit in a black and white version. I will struggle on because it is an interesting journey to try the new way of seeing . However it is nice to know that others share my bias.

Ned: this is a wider view. Different angle as well
Any comments on the merit of a close shot, emphasizing the barn, versus putting the barn in it's environment? Does anyone have strong feelings either way (i.e. should these things always be shot one way or the other)?

Andre; play with it to your hearts content. Post your versions on this thread. Seeing how others can interpret these things is always useful to me.
Thanks for the tip on straightening. My straightening tool in Aperture can be a little crude so fine adjustments can be a bit frustrating. Plus a lot of these old barns are not straight at the best of times. And, as in this instance, the horizon is not horizontal as this part of the prairie slopes gently to the left towards a river valley. Hard to find a true vertical or horizontal to use as a guide.

Trevor, I like both perspectives; however the barn with its surrounding environment is my favorite.

    Hi Trevor,

Thanks for the invitation. You should know by now I don’t like doing that. It is your image, not mine and you know how bad I am at Post.

This second one is even better. A sloping horizon does not bother when the horizon is close to the subject but when it is a distant horizon your brain tells you it has to be straight. Sometimes the subject is really not straight but in a picture we have to straighten it to make it look right. Depending on what your brain tells you, you can straighten to the extent where it looks right.
The first image feels like it is leaning over to the right. The second image is perfect.

The sun was really low and it is a pity you lost a little of that really late afternoon yellow/red warmth. Be careful of using auto WB when the sun is that low, it simply cancel’s out the beauty of the golden hour.

Trevor hallway between the two for me. Just a personal view. I'd know better if I were there, so send my plane ticket quick.
Composition is a very big topic. Your exposures are excellent and there is tremendous scope to experiment with whats in the frame. You first crop/shot a couple of steps back could be ok.
There may be something in a lower pov closer in on no.2 as there are the lines of wheat? stubble that have interesting forms and shadow they could be used a leading lines to draw in the eye.
Or you could go in real close to the barn say just framing the doors or part of the roof with the access point. Get a real sharp shot of the wood grain etc.
There's nothing wrong at all with what you have in my view I just like to try different things.
    Cheers
    Ned
