    Jumping

I have several sequences of photos that need to go together to give them the impact. This triptych is one of them. This is my granddaughter and so I cannot look at the pictures objectively. They were taken quite spontaneously and she was not aware of me taking them. Also, the opportunity came up suddenly and I did not have a chance to prepare myself but the resulting "motion blur" does not bother me. I had to use photoshop to line them up and add and subtract things in places, which was good practice for me.

I like the look of purpose and concentration in the face and body language.

    Do you think it works?

A little philosophical: If only we could look at the world trough the eyes of grandparents, everything around us would be beautiful.
Tony, I think you did very well here. The motion blur is perfect to illustrate the action. You can work a little on the slight misalignment especially on the last row against the, what seems to be a, wall. Not serious, once framed it won’t be obvious.

Yes it works. You should frame it in a triptych frame and hang it on a wall.

I think you did well for a spontainious idea and I like the way your GD is looking left [right] in the right image to send us back to the other pair.. The young do enjoy simple things that age prevents us from. Something does anyway

Wonderfully well. The idea of making it a triptych was superb.

I really like this shot! Interestingly, I've been thinking of trying something similar, to fill a frame that my wife has and wants to use in the living room. So if you've inspired me to get at it!

If it were mine, probably one of the only things I'd change is that the individual images are not the same size. Just a personal preference, but for me, it would drive me crazy to walk past it every day knowing that the sections are not exactly identical. But I have issues.

Great triptych! The images seem a bit over blue and might benefit from some warmer skin tones...

    Thanks for all the comments.

Andrew, I tried to rationalise the variation in widths by saying that the outstretched arms needed extra width. This was all quite experimental for me and I would have needed to go back quite a way and rework to get the sizes right.

One thing that I have found with photoshop is that there does not seem to be any way of specifying crop sizes or positions on the canvas by numbers. I find that it is hard to get things really accurate with the mouse even using the ruler lines around the edges. Am I missing something? My knowledge of photoshop is still somewhat limited.

Richard, the colours are pretty much as I saw them in reality but I will see what adjustments I can make to improve things.

The only time I've tried this before was for a Christmas card, about 2 years ago, I believe. What I did, was start with a blank white canvas, of the size I wanted the final project to be, and then through subtraction (accounting for the spaces in between the images, and on the outsides), I calculated how large each image had to be. Then, I took the images I had already processed, and reduced them to the necessary sizes, keeping the proportions constant.

That way, there is no measuring with the little ruler in PS, it's all exactly calculated by the program itself. You could also use pixel dimension, rather than linear measurements too if it's easier.

But I've only done one. I am very interested in trying again now though!

I must say I have never heard that word before 'triptych', but I like the effect and I will give it a go.

What a lovely natural photo .... I actually like the different sized images as it shows that your GD was jumping over the different lines of grass and having fun as children should. Well done, lovely.

They are great photos. Another alternative is to have the middle picture bigger than the other two, which are the same size - May get over the outstretched arms problem ?

One of the reasons I prefer Paint Shop Pro becuase re-sizing can be done by pixels or percentages. If you set up a given size in the first place and then resize the image by percentage or decimal of a percent until it fits. When making a crop there is a readout in pixels of what one is doing, x&y etc.

One could say the outstretched arms of the middle shot hold the outside photos to it.

Thanks for all the replies - much appreciated.

Richard, I tried increasing the saturation and that was a big improvement generally and improved the skin tones.

Andrew, I understand what you say but I still don't know how to crop to a precise number of pixels or size without changing the scale in photoshop - actually it's elements 10 that I use. Also, I don't know how to position an image on the canvas precisely - I had to do it by eye.

In this case, the original images were rather higgledy-piggledy so that I had to quite a lot of transformation using the perspective tool.

    Hi Tony,

If I'm understanding your question correctly ie; scale...

In Elements 9, when you click the crop tool a menu bar appears on the top. In the 1st box called Aspect Ratio select Use Photo Ratio or Custom (instead one of the preset crops). With photo ratio you can just drag on the box to resize and keep the proportions, and in custom you can enter the number of pixels for both the height and the width.
