Very nice shot Jon. I've compared this to your B&W version and whilst the B&W is good, I prefer the colour in this instance. In your other thread you mention it is a busy image and I think this is because there is so much local contrast occuring naturally in the scene. The B&W is just a little overpowering for me.

Jon;
I agree with Dave's comment - I didn't comment on the B&W version and although I found it striking it was a bit 'in your face' for me. This one is beautiful and a wall hanger

Re: Whatcom Falls, color version
Hi Jon!
I really like this shot. And the color version of it.
I thought you did a very nice conversion, but I just wonder if this photo is really a good candidate for conversion.
The tonality is so similar throughout the scene (with the exception of the actual falls of course) when converted that I wonder if that may be adding to the “busy” appearance. It seems harder for the eye to differentiate between the different components of the scene.
The color version, however, is another story. There is enough color range that the scene becomes more defined and more apparent. As an example, the vegetation on the arch of the bridge framing the falls. As another the yellow lichen(?) on the bridge. A lot of some of those effects may be getting lost in the conversion.
Either way it’s a nice shot of a gorgeous place and a good place to plant your camera and pull the trigger!

I prefer the colour shot if only because it is capturing the colours of the moment. The yellow and green of the trees are so well complimentary to the bridge.

I agree with the folks that like the color version better and the reasons. It is certainly a beautiful capture and the colors are splendid. I'm not sure, but it looks like it could use a bit of counterclockwise rotation.

Re: Whatcom Falls, color version
Thanks for the comments all. Dave and Terry, I think you are on to something as to how "busy" this is and maybe because of the similar tonality throughout. I had a hard time with converting some Pics from Zion National Park ( they where busy in your face as well ) and I now assume its probably the same reasons. I will need to pay closer attention to this when choosing a photo for converting for effect rather than for just converting

Re: Whatcom Falls, color version
I also prefer the color version due to the separation between the water, bridge and foliage accomplished by the differences in color...

Prefer color. The subtle differences in the greens help everything stand out.
I disagree withe the image needing rotation. If you look at the trees in the background, they are straight.
