rose taken with M39 Jupiter 135 mm lens.

i took this image with a M39 Jupiter 135 mm lens.that I brought for £8 from a charity shop.i used it on a canon 40d with a EOS to M39 adapter that i got off ebay.this is the first time i've used old glass with dslr. but i had a little problem focusing. as long as the subject matter is about a meter from the front of the lens i can focus ok. there's like a sweet spot at around a meter using F5.6 or F8.any more or less than that its just a blur. i guessing this has something to do with the distance between the rear of the lens and the sensor. so i'm hoping someone could explain it a bit more.
    straight from camera c&c welcome

Paul, the M39 mount "flange focal distance" is 28.8mm. That's the distance between the lens mount face (flange) and the focal plane. By mounting a M39 lens on your Canon Eos, which has a flange focal distance of 44.0mm, you are effectively increasing the flange focal distance for which the lens is designed by 15.2mm, which is the same as using an extension tube of 15.2mm length. This will decrease the minimum lens to subject distance at which the lens is able to achieve focus and provide a "macro" capability but the lens will not be able to focus at infinity. The Canon EOS to M39 adaptor that I have seats fully within the EOS lens mount and therefore does not add to the flange focal distance of the EOS camera. I presume yours is similar.

It wasn't the old lens that made that image what it is...it was that thing twixt your ears.
I would submit that using it was more trouble than it was worth...but it is a great shot.

Nice image ... if you want to use the lens at other longer distances one solution would be to get a MFT camera or one of the smaller ILCs from Nikon or Pentax, .... for at shorter distances there are cheap 'plain tube' extension tube sets, and close-up lenses.
I would say you got a good buy judging from prices at http://top35mm.com/catalog?page=5

thanks for the link a very interesting site. i've just brought a Industar 50mm 3.5 for £15 but not off there. and i'm looking at buying a olympus omd em1 and some adapters to carry on using these old lens.
