Just in case it helps you to know my approach to photography in general that explains my approach to skies in particular, I don't ever remember trying to replicate what I saw at the time I released the shutter. That's because my attitude is that I am making a two-dimensional object (a photo) from a three-dimensional setting (the scene). Considering that I am starting out with the knowledge that I am keeping only two-thirds of the dimensions, I try to make up for that loss by making the photo as close to how I envision it could be rather than how the scene looked when I released the shutter.
