Brian - this is a very interesting image. The detail and colors are great.
I think I would crop some of the left side. Also, I'd try a bit more contrast on the flower.
I would probably retain the same top and bottom distance as the original but reduce the left side by using a different size ratio.
Possibly, slightly darken the right side leaves as well.

I too have noticed that your images are getting better. With regard to the above, when you PP in Gimp are you playing with levels? I've found that some slight adjustments in levels and/or contrast can bring out more details in somewhat hot areas.
Keep on keeping on, you're getting it.
This learning curve reminds me of when i visited the Philippines for the first time. When i returned to Canada I realized that in three weeks I had never noticed a gas station. I actually phoned to find out how they filled up the gas tank. i was not seeing anything that was 'normal' because of culture shock overload.
Never crossed my mind to use different size ratios to bring out different looks. thanks.
They look good Brian, but yes those levels should help with the flower itself. It is easier to get the exposure a bit better in the areas that have more over exposure that way.
