    The Making of a Photograph

This was shot high atop Loveland Pass CO (el. 11,990 ft.) with my Art Director/Umbrella Wrangler/Soul Mate as I was trying to get a shot!

But a shot of what for crying out loud?

It was raining and the clouds were all over us!

Anyone that would stand out in this holding a stupid umbrella while some idiot tried to take a photograph in high winds and shut-out cloud cover???

Must be True Love (because the pay sucks)!

    The Making of a Photograph

Though it seemed like we were looking out into the vast abyss, this was what I was really shooting on Loveland!

Your soul mate and umbrella were kind enough to be sporting coordinating colors. Shame on you for not complying! Regardless, it's a really neat photo, almost as nice as the monochrome landscape.

    Thanks Mike!

I wanted to be sure I could be seen by passing aircraft when I fell off that cliff we were standing on!

She had the umbrella and would make a nice Mary Poppins-like landing!

My hubby likes to go fishing in that type of weather. I think he' s nuts, but then I say, he doesn't drink, smoke or go to bars, thank goodness he's fishing!
I hope you thanked your soul mate for helping you get a great shot!

Thanks for sharing Terry. I had to chuckle when I saw it, because my wife has done the same and similar things for me in the past. She is always helpful, and she is amazingly accommodating about me leaving the house an hour before sunrise on Saturdays and Sundays, skipping dinner to get a sunset, and about how many times I'll take a different route on the road just to check out the photography possibilities.

It is indeed a blessing to have someone like that in your life.

And the result? A fantastic image. Very well done.

You are truly in God's country...if you're still there, you might try Independence Pass.

Photography started as a means of getting reference material for my paintings of nature subjects.

Interesting...I do the opposite, looking at old masters as inspiration for photography.

    Hi Terry,

Thanks for sharing.. Beautiful story that resulted in a gorgeous landscape. The first image is really neat.. Is that a high key image?

PS I'm lucky too, my husband actually brings me bugs.

Thank you Cliff! We got a pretty good chuckle out of it ourselves! Well, after it was over of course! She is a blessing I don't deserve but it just wouldn't be the same without! We are each other's #1 fan!

Chauncy I couldn't agree more! I was. I'm not, but I did! We got married 16 years ago at the bottom in Aspen. Our gazebo in the park we got married in was still there! In fact, the crime scene tape was still wrapped around it from 16 years ago! I have a fairly decent shot from Independence I'll put up.

Thank you Christina! The first image isn't high key. It is exposed properly with the white cloud background. That shot was processed minimally (by me for them at their request). But the background was completely left alone! I couldn't have gotten a better background for love nor money! The shot was not taken by me but by some friends we were out there with (From the vehicle with a p&s! They weren't about to get out there in that!) I have express permission to use it for story telling purposes and I am holding out on signing the model release until the lawyers return from the negotiating table! And yes, I am recognizable in this photo because they caught my best side!

Your hubby brings you bugs??? Eewww! (Very cool Hubby! My kind of guy!)

    Hi Terry,

Thank you for sharing.. Obviously I'm still trying to figure out high key. It's a gorgeous image, and not because they caught your best side... LOL Adore your sense of humour... I'm sure this photo will be truly memorable and magical for you and your wife forever more..

Yes, he does.. in Mexico he would bring me and keep an eye out for all kinds of bugs and critters for me. Alas they are hard to find in Vancouver but we are due for a rainy spell and I have asked him to keep an eye out for a slug, but truly any kind of but will do. He's my soul mate...
