Has anyone read "Flight Plan, How to Photograph Birds in Flight" by Jim Neiger? I'm wondering if its worth the $50.

I have a synopsis of his instructions for photographing birds in flight and they are quite concise and interesting... However, $50 USD is a pretty hefty price.

No haven't read it and no it's not worth $50. Too much information available for the cost of internet service. Unless you are a hard copy type of guy and do better with books.

I have looked around on the interwebs quite a bit. 95% of the sites that give info on BIF technique are garbage, too general, outdated, or even have terrible advice which would make matters worse for the uninitiated. The other 5% have useful, significantly detailed instructions and tips, but they all pretty much cover the same things and it's nothing new for me.

It was my impression (which is quite possibly incorrect) that Jim's book/techniques had something more unique or out of the box; both in terms of approaching the task at hand, and in terms of physically handling a long lens. I thought he had some special ways of doing things that makes it reasonable to, say, hand hold a 600mm lens (not that I have such a lens). Anyway, that was why I had considered his book as opposed to the ocean of info available online.

Anyway, yeah, for now I will probably pass on that book. Thanks

The book is very detailed and contains everything you need to know to successfully photograph birds in flight using super telephoto lenses hand held. If you are serious about bird photograghy, this book will be well woprth the $50. Several hundred copies have been sold with lots of positive feedback and no complaints. If you buy it and don't think it's worth the 50 bucks, then send me an email and I will personbaly make sure you are happy or refund your money.
