Under exposing slightly when using slide (transparency) film was a reasonably common practice to maximise saturation in shots like this.

You are bucking the trend using this approach with a digital camera where the practice seems to be to utilise full exposure to keep any noise to a minimum and then adjust levels or curves and vibrance/saturation in PP.

You have achieved what you set out to do but I think the result would have been better if it had been done with post processing assuming you have some software to do it. A bit of cropping around the flower would also help.

When my Finepix S4200 tries for full exposure with dark red or bright oranges most of the detail is lost. This may be because i am a neewbee and not setting the right parameters but even in auto it has the same problem.

With much tighter cropping i would have lost the two horizontal leaves in the background which to me would have detracted from the open feeling.
