B/W Conversion Practice / Dartmouth Picture

Yesterday, I learned about how to convert picture to B/W in LR by reading articles online. Then I tried a few conversion on my pictures taken at Dartmouth college one week ago. I will post both Color and B/W version here. Comments welcomed.

BTW, I just learned how to add frame to the picture by using "canvas size" in PS. Is there any easier way or preset to do this? I see a lot of fancy frames in other post here.

#1. Occom Pond at Dartmouth // I am not sure which one is better for this image.

#2. Dartmouth College Library // I prefer B/W version for this image. It give me the "Old" College sense.

#3. Tree, Bench, Top of Library // I want the green color on the top of the library to catch viewer's eye. But I also like the "calm" mood in B/W image. I should have composed the green library top a little bit higher. Is it OK if I make it bigger and higher in PS?

Excellent conversions, actually amazingly well done considering that they are your first attempt. You now have a whole new world of photography opened up for you, especially when you "see" and "think" in black-and-white before releasing the shutter.

Notice the slight halos on the lamp poles of the second conversion that do not exist in the color version.

You may find some of the videos by Gavin Hoey at http://www.gavtrain.com/?cat=5 or by Julieanne Kost at http://www.jkost.com/lightroom.html of interest if you haven't already visited them.

    Mike, Thanks for your coment.

These are my 3rd~5th B/W image ever converted. You can see my first one in Mini Competition #873 posted two weeks ago. At that time, I just get LR and still learning the basic of LR . There is not much color in the original color image. I just changing the treatment to “Black & White” in one mouse click. I did not do any mindfully convertion.

For three images, I did try different ways to convert and addjust them. The good thing is , when I am working in LR, I can sense what I really want to achive in the image. I really enjoy the process. I had archtecture design training in China 20 years ago. Even though I did not practice design last 20 years, art and design is always in my mind.

Right now, I am working on my business laptop and can't see the images well in this computer, I will check the halos in the #2 after I get home tonight.

Having been trying the same exercise all day I am really interested to see your conversions. They are very good. To me, they seem to say autumn whilst in colour and winter whilst in B&W. Great compositions too.
