I do like to be beside the seaside

Yesterday we had a brazing walk on the beach...... here are some of the results.

I went with the object of shooting an empty beach (but other people had other ideas) and then to practice converting to B&W in PP. We had bright sunshine and heavy showers all in the space of two hours so the light and sky changed dramatically in that time which is what I have tried to show here.

You can see the sand moving which means the real moral to them all is: brazing + getting down low = sand in your camera.

    Your comments are welcome

Kaye - a little more definition back into the sea in #3 would make it a super image.

Hi Kay, nice sequence. I particularly like the first and last images. The high contrast images are dramatic for me oeof the balance between sky, sea, and sand has got lost. The last image really works for me, (hough the horizon needs adjustment?). But it may not for others who have never been on a windy beach when the sands start to 'flow'.

I tried moving the horizon, but whichever way I do it, it looks wrong. The sea goes out a mighty long way and I've ended up adjusting lots of yesterday's photos for the horizon - even the in camera level was debatable in its usefulness. Thanks for looking and commenting

Very nice images. I particularly like the vast immensity of open space they convey. Is this a function of the particular lens; I'm guessing a wide angle? The seaside is an important place to me and your photos accomplish what I've not yet been able to. I can hear the roaring wind, the surf and feel the flowing blowing sand They are especially effective in B&W. I haven't tried post processing to B&W short of just clicking on a few of the Lightroom B&W presets to see what they provide. How did you approach the B&W conversion?

Andrew - I am new to PP too. I shoot in RAW and used photoshop elements for the conversion. Most of them I just removed the colour and then adjusted shadows and contrast until I ended up with what i liked - so nothing very specific other than good old fashioned trial and error. One day I will have a proper workflow, at least I promise myself I will, I don't know whether that really ever happens.

The lens is a 30mm prime. Actually marketed as a macro lens but I find it works well for landscapes too.

    Thanks for looking and commenting.

Thanks for the suggestion Steve. I selected just the sea and reduced the mid tones and lightened the shadows - is this better ??

Kaye - a tad more visibility of the 'white horses' on the waves and it would be perfect - it's amazing how similar that branch / view is to a beach I fish off in NE Scotland - it's also generally very windy there so looking at #4 I can almost taste the sand.

You sure are making great progress with your monochromes considering the very little time that you have spent on them. I wonder if I'm to blame for suggesting that you convert your photo of the picnic table.

The second one is magical for me. I could explain several reasons for that but I've been at the computer for nearly ten straight hours and need to get away or lose my mind (what little is left of it).

    Hi Kaye,

Lovely images.. #1 is magical for me.. Beautiful exposure, composition, and a wonderful sense of walking along a beautiful windswept beach.

Nice images, Kaye, they all resonate with me but I particularly like the 3rd one. The b&w is very effective in this shot and the bending grasses in the foreground emphasise the windy conditions.

Nice B/W images. Specially like #1.
I will turn the water part in #2 and #3 lighter. IMO, it can be "Dark grey" instead of black. Right now, they are too heavy for me. I think the lighter tone will push water back a little bit.
