    Volcanic Shoreline

This location is about 15 minutes from home but I just discovered it this past weekend. Quite the wonder of nature that the volcanoes provided for us to enjoy thousands of years later. I visited in the late afternoon and will definitely go back as photographic opportunities abound in and around the cliffs and shoreline.

Looking out on the ocean with Diamond Head in the background.

I loved the shape of this cliff but the composition of this image was a bit of a challenge as some lucky (& likely very wealthy) person's backyard fence ends just to the left of the frame.

    Volcanic Shoreline

One of the many outcrops into the ocean.

Same outcrop, this time in black & white trying to include some foreground interest.

Any and all C&C welcome as usual.

But, as you say, the photographic opportunities must be endless. Have fun!

    Hi Shane

Beautiful place, but you wouldn't want to lose your footing! Lots of drama with good leading lines which you have made use of. I like the B&W and am wondering whether a touch more contrast is called for, not so much for foreground but for the background rocks. Otherwise it looks just a tad bland, when the place is anything but. My favourite is the 1st shot because there is so much rocky drama contrasted with the calmness of plants and sea.

Hi Shane - lucky you to have discovered a great spot! #1 is my favorite, and the lighting is wonderful on the rocks in #2. That one would be awesome with a tall ship in the water over to the right.

I am so envious that this place is so close to your home. I would be eating a picnic lunch there at least once a week. (Notice the interest in eating over photography. )

I like the third one best and wonder how the second one would be if you could get low enough to hide the water, especially at sunrise or sunset.

Thank you Donald, Pania, Susan and Mike.

The late afternoon lighting is gorgeous but can be a bit challenging to capture and process well. But since it is so close to home it is a good place to experiment with different compositions and settings without a lot of risk that I won't be able to return. Mike, consideration of the horizon placement was definitely on my mind with some of these shots and I need to figure out how to reverse the center column of my tripod for some low shots (there will be a test in my living room soon ).

I do have to watch out for rogue waves though so careful consideration of tripod placement does limit my compositions somewhat. Believe it or not there were people jumping from some of the cliffs and even a few surfers catching waves just a few yards from the rocks! It is much safer on land IMHO.
