    canon 600 flash

brand new flash, put batteries in , switch to on., screen shows "crossed battery"
    Check batteries, got voltage.
check manual, P. 14 said" using AA/LR6 batteries other than the alkaline type may cause improper battery contact due to the irregular shape of the battery contact."
I checked, I am using AA alkaline Duracell batteries.
I put the same batteries to 580 EX it works,

    Any advise?

anyway, will bring the thing back to the shop and let them figure it out.

Also, besides the "crossed battery" shows, the screen did light up background light for one second and everything back to darkness.
    no response to any button.

switch off and on again, "crossed battery" sign shows.

    thanks

    Bill

friends, I am back and got the solution.
    You tube don't have help.
reached Canon forum ( speedlight 600 battery problem) and many people experience the same problem.
how they solve it is to press the 2 clear buttons together at the same time and turn the power to on.
    then, my flash is on.!!
    thanks anyway.
Good that I don't need to spent time going back to camera shop again tomorrow!

Well I am glad to hear you sorted the issue out. I was going to suggest the cover for the compartment is difficult to close and that may be the cause of your issue with certain battery. I use Eneloop and never had an issue. Try those, you will not regret that purchase.

    Re: canon 600 flash

I got the solution from forum.usa.canon.com>camera>speedlights
another concern is there is report that the same problem happen to user for their 1, 2 years old 600 flash too.
may it be those advance circuit that too complicate to cause this kind of battery signal error?
I never have this kind of problem with my 580Ex.
post this as I saw there are curious and knowledge folks here may like to explore into this interesting issue.

Eneloop battery: I heard this famous brand long ago.
By chance pick up some ATC rechargeable batteries of 2700mah, disappointed. only good for around 10 flash and done!
Check locally and they are short of eneloop during the whole last year.
I definitely will buy it form the States through mail and enjoy the quality from it.

As with Hasseeb, I use Eneloop batteries and have never found fault with them. I have quite a few of them and a pair of chargers. I purchased the second charger so I can charge eight batteries at one time. Although, a set of freshly charged Eneloop AA batteries lasts a long time, I often shoot with two cameras and two flashes. I like to be able to charge the batteries from both flashes at one time.

BTW: I have not kept records, but I expect that my Eneloops have paid for themselves over the years I have used them. No more purchasing loads of one-time-use AA batteries. This is good for the environment also...

    Have a guess :)

    Re: canon 600 flash

I use the Sony equivalents, and they've been a god-send to use in my 600EX-RT flashes.

    No problems at all.
