    Miniture world of Fungi

Something different today from down the bottom of the garden where I let nature take control.

These fungi were growing on some old palm trunks I had cut down so a section was chopped out and I now have more images than I know what to do with

Shot at 1:1 magnification with slight crops to improve composition and I have a clear favourite with this batch.

This is really great Grahame. No 2 is really making me feel like an ant.
The colours are beautiful. The composition in 2&3 is great.
In #1 I would "cheat" a little by having removed the ones not fitting the frame.

Beautifully done. I prefer #1, although it is hard to choose between that and #2. Are these stacked?

Grahame, those are some of the most beautiful fungi pictures that I've seen. Unlike you, I don't have a clear favorite but it's either #1 or #2. I love the textures in #1 but I really like the sense of "family" in #2. Great compositions!

Wow... You've made Fungi look gorgeous... #1 (for the detail) and #2 are my favourites, with #2 being my favourite because it looks like another world. ie; the fungi are exotic trees and who knows what species inhabits and roam that magical forest.

    Re: Miniture world of Fungi

Andre, David, Brian, Dan, Terri, John and James thank you each for your comments,

Andre, Good idea about removing the ones in No 1 that did not fit the frame, I had not thought of that but wonder if the ones above would have looked misshapen, I'll consider this on my next session. I know where to find some large black ants, this could be interesting.

David, thank you it was fun doing them which is what it's all about.

Brian, Inspiration is what it's all about and forget the crawling bring it indoors and set it up on the kitchen worktop island like I do. Much more comfortable.

Dan, None are stacked I seem to have given up on that these days. I assume you ask because of the DoF of No 1 which appears quite deep. It may well be that I was not in quite so close for this one and it's only at f22 but I took great care in positioning for all to maximise the DoF. I have also checked against the original and this one is a very minor crop of about 5% from top and right side.

Terri, thank you for the very kind words, texture, colour and compositions were what I aimed for with these.

    John, thanks for commenting

    James, thanks for commenting

    General info ........................................

These were all taken using my new 50 cents (computer designed) cardboard snoot fitted to the SB-600 on the camera. I had wondered if the lighting was going to be too flat, not sure yet and will try and take some with my conventional set-up. What I do find surprising is that there appears adequate lighting under and above the subjects.

As for the colouring, once again I forgot to take a white balance test shot, must put it on a list.

And my clear favourite was No 3, looks like I need to re-consider my artistic ideas

    Hi Christina,

One of the reasons I love the macro work is that we get to see the beauty in some of these tiny wonders that are so easily overlooked. This 12 inch length of trunk had hundreds in different sizes and groupings of about four different types the smallest ones as you can see in No 2 about 2mm high.

If only I can capture an ant and train him to remain still

    Hi Grahame,

Yes, indeed. I noticed that other world while I was in a prone position photographing the waterfall. But I'm sticking to landscapes for the next little while, and you're making it difficult. (: one day...

Perhaps a drop of honey might draw some interesting critters... And now that I think of it, I will have to try it myself, but later.
