    Failed dream

From 1890 until the late 1960's the Government of Canada would give you 160 acres if you cleared the trees and planted all the land to a crop. If you managed to do this inside of ten years you got the option to buy another 160 acres. A lot of people spent the first several years literally living in a hole in the ground. A pit dug down six feet and lined with logs with a rough roof of logs and canvas.

These people, because I assume there was a husband and wife, made it far enough to build a small house. However, perhaps like many others, they discovered that 160 acres was only enough to guarantee back breaking labour and little or no income to improve their lot in life. No money for a larger tractor or better equipment. So they chucked it in and sold out.

Fascinating story, Trevor! Thanks for sharing it and the photo. You might want to consider dialing back the polarization in the upper sky, as it's the first thing my eye sees when I view the photo. Otherwise, great light!

Enjoyed the story Trevor, but the picture doesn't grab me.

Do you do that in post processing by adjusting the hue, saturation and luminance or is it a in camera thing by adjusting the polarizing filter?

Negative impact feedback is as important to me as positive.

I am struggling with this subject as the canola stubble in the foreground is both highly reflective and the the same hue as the old house. With Aperture it is hard to adjust one without wrecking the other

Interesting story and photo. Re: Mike's suggestion: I have had a habit of doing that with the polarizer and have not had good luck recovering the correct hue and a realistic look with the GND in Lightroom. What I might do here, to push more emphasis to the homestead, is crop about 1/3 of the sky as I think the cloud border is there to suggest an upper edge to your image. Then I might use the GND to take just a titch of exposure out of the near foreground. Just thoughts... might help your image express the story a little better.
