    A cloud covered moon

    Hi all,

I know this isn't the greatest image but I thought there might be some hope for it. The other night the moon was gorgeous and the clouds added to it. The only lens I had available was just my kit lens (14-50mm). I attempted the pic anyway and this is what I got. The pic with blue sky has been edited a bit and the other is pretty much as it came out of the camera. The settings I used were ISO 800, f 5.7, Ex 1/2. Any feedback would be welcomed.

First thing, Rita - You'll see I've posted the images into your post, rather than having them sit as thumbnails at the bottom of it.

I think the most important part of photography is having the 'eye' to see an picture. The technical stuff about how to then get that image, comes later. And what you've done here is seen something that so many more people would never see.

What I mean is that they would look up, the would see the scene, but it wouldn't register as something beautiful/dramatic. They would just carry on with their business. What you did was stopped and looked at what you were seeing. You can't teach that.

You've obviously experienced the challenges of photographic the moon in that you've seen how bright it is. For any picture with the moon in it, I've always shot two frames - one for the moon and one for everything else - and then blended them. This is one example of that.

The other thing is - never forget your 'rules' of composition. You've got the branches of a tree sticking in on the right hand side. I don't think these really have a place in the picture.

Just keeping 'seeing'. Good on you.

Hi Rita, I agree with Donald Seeing is a huge part of photography. Also capturing images of the moon are harder than one would think. Add clouds and I can be a bit unpredictable. but fun none the less.
I give it a try from time to time.

Here is one I took with my old D1000 and old Tamron 200-400

Sorry about the thumb nail sized image. I couldn't get it to upload any other way this morning.

    Re: A cloud covered moon

Donald, thank you for reporting the pics for me I couldn't get them to download any other way than thumbnails.

The technical stuff is what I am trying to learn now. Many times I see something but don't quite know how to capture it. Sure having a lot of fun in the process though. Also working on combing pics in Elements. In all I took about 8 shots of the moon that night but the others rated from blurred to a bright moon on a black background....I will keep trying! Your example is most helpful.
I agree that the branches have no place in the pic. Totally missed seeing that, I was concentrating too hard on the moon

All of your comments are greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Hi Mark, yes, it was more difficult than I would have thought and I am sure my neighbors were questioning my sanity seeing me taking pictures of the sky in the dark but that is ok because I was having fun doing it.

    Thank you for your comments.

    Mark and Rita,

    Even if you are using attachments here at CiC while the TinyPic problems persist, you do not, as Donald demonstrated, have to leave them as Thumbnails alone, you can follow these steps;

Part 2: How to make an attached thumbnail appear larger and inline
    1. Click the image to make it bigger
    2. Right-click on the image and select "Copy Image Location" (in Firefox) or "Copy Shortcut" (in IE)
    3. Click "Edit Post" and position the cursor where you want the image to appear, then use the "Insert Image" A cloud covered moon icon and Paste (Ctrl+V) the shortcut into the dialog and click "OK"
    4. Click "Save Changes" button.
(if you attached more than one image, repeat steps 1-3 for each to get the bigger images inline)

Sometimes; when you do Part 2 step 1, it goes to the image, so you may need to use your browser's "Back" button between steps 2 and 3.

HELP THREAD: How can I post images here?

    Rita,

I believe you said your shutter speed was 1/2 second, can I ask if you were using a tripod?

    Thanks,

Hi Dave, thanks for the info I will try that.

No, I was not using a tripod because I didn't have one. A friend has now leant me one to try out so I will be making use of it from here on......yeah!

Ah, I thought I detected a bit of camera movement, that explains it.

    All the best,
