    Shaker Village of Pleasant Hill

I spent the weekend at a University of Tennessee photography workshop at Shaker Village of Pleasant Hill in Harrodsburg, Kentucky. The weather wasn't great, but I was still able to press the shutter a few times. I had a blast. The facility is beautiful and the food is great. I highly recommend a visit.

    Here's their web site

My goals for the weekend were just to capture the spirit of the place, and to practice using light. The buildings have lots of big windows, and the cloudy weather made for some wonderful light coming through them. I experimented a lot with fill flash augmenting the natural light.

    C&C welcome and much appreciated.

Re: Shaker Village of Pleasant Hill

My only problem would be with #4 where the bright central lighting is a little 'harsh'.

I would have preferred to light from further to the right, off camera flash, so the light was spread more evenly from the right hat towards the distant hat on the left.

Or alternatively shot with a longer exposure on a tripod and little or no flash.

But both of those options probably weren't available and it is a very minor point.

A little bit of selective reduction in brightness may be worth trying.

    Thanks Bruce, Dave, and Geoff.

Geoff, I see your point. I may try the brightness reduction. Thanks for taking the time to comment.

Very nice Cliff. 2,3 and 4 stand out for me - particularly 3. A bit of burning and dodging might be in order here and there but a very nice and interesting set.

A very nice set. You definitely accomplished your goal in my mind. The light in #3 is particularly exquisite.

I love the composition of #6 as it pertains to the lamp in the window. Try different crops at the bottom to determine if you can come up with something more compelling.

Excellent set, Cliff. All are keepers, but the light in #3 is so gorgeous that I'd pick it for my overall favorite. Well done.

    Cliff,

I think #3 and #5 are fantastic, well done.

Could you elaborate on the lighting/flash augmentation on #3?

I think I can see what you were trying to achieve with #7 in the sky and the building but the perspective issues over power the great work in the sky.

Thanks everyone, I really appreciate you taking the time to look and comment.

Robbie - I didn't use a flash on #3. There is a door just out of the frame on camera left - that's where all that light is coming from. The day was cloudy so the light was well diffused. Also, I see your point on #7. I'll try to work on getting that straightened out.

That's a good set of images Cliff, well done. The converging verticals on #7 detract a little from the overall image. It looks like you had a good weekend.

    Hi Cliff,
    great set; love No.3.
I agree about No.7 (converging verticals), but if it bothers you it will only take a couple of minutes to sort out.
    Regards
    John
