    Ockham church HDR

    Hi All
This is my first attempt at HDR done on my iPad Not the best for PP but hey ho! That's all I've got at the moment. We can only use what we have eh?
These church shots I took a couple of months back whilst visiting my parents in leafy Surrey.
    Taken with a nikon D90 and Tokina 12-24mm f/4
Any pointers on shooting appreciated my PP Is kinda limited right now.

    Ockham church HDR

    Thanks for looking

Steve: a very nice shot, and nicely done on an iPad. One of the great things about HDR is that is allows up to bring detail out of the shadows and in the highlight. One of the problems is that people tend to keep those areas in shadow lighten up, In my reality and it is mine and only mine, I would suggest a curves layer darken the image down maybe 1/2 to 3/4 of a stop, then taking the paint brush slowly removing it from those areas that you want lighter. I love HDR work in building I tend to lighten up the images more detail in the shadows, out door I tend to want a good balance between the light and the shadow, if something should be in shadow and appears to light than I will darken it just a touch. Remember that is in my reality, yours maybe and probably is different.

    Cheers:

    Allan

Steve it's a nice shot and the HDR treatment works pretty well IMO. Not too extreme. Did you use several different exposures and what is the app called ?

    Thanks Dave
The app only allows two exposures so is pretty limited but kinda fun to have a play with. It's called "True HDR"

I like this. Thank you for posting.
I hate when someone says 'my first xxx' , and it turns out like this, arrhhgg .
Any more details as to how you achieved this?

    Re: Ockham church HDR

HDR aside, it's a nice photo. I like old churches and especially old graveyards. The composition is appealing; I like the different angles of the gravestones, the shaft of light across the lower part of the image, the cropped tree to the left, which, combined with the three gravestones in the foreground, provide counter-balance to the church at the right. I would like to see more of the overhanging tree in the foreground, but that's a minor point.

Well, that's my inexpert assessment of composition.

But I think the HDR detracts from the image. I don't know if it was needed in order to extend the dynamic range of the camera, but I prefer a more sombre representation of this scene to one rendered by HDR.

    Regards

    Tony

Err! No sorry, nancy I seem to have deleted the original exposures. I only have limited room to store shots. So I tend to delete surplus.
I remember metering the sky and taking an exposure or two for that, then metering shaded areas and exposing a couple for that, but bar that can't really remember, sorry.
I would have used a set aperture for both probably f/16 as the Tokina 12-24 works nice around here. I normally use ISO of 400 for landscapes shots, so I would imagine I used this.
As I could only use two exposures. I remember taking about six shots in total and played about combining them to find the best combination. Not very technical
Sorry I can't be of more help.
