    storm acoming

This type of image is one of the reasons that I gave up shooting landscapes...could not capture the grandeur of the scene. 20/20 hindsight, what would you have done to this small mountain town with the encroaching storm.

In my opinion you did a wonderful job of capturing the grandeur of the scene. I can't give any advice since I don't think I could have captured it better or even as well.

    Chauncey,

I can not give the answer but I'm hoping someone is going to give some advice.

Yesterday I took some landscapes, heavily overcast, rain just starting and great colouring in the greens. I have processed a couple and they are rubbish and do not portray the colouring and feeling anywhere near the originals. Is it because we try and process them to be like a sunny day pic?

What is the intended subject area?

At the moment, there is an interesting foreground with a dramatic distant background of hills and clouds.

That works fine for me, but the houses virtually disappear into the background. Do you want to give them more prominence at the expense of the foreground?

One simple alternative would be to crop a bit from the left side and use a different size ratio which would concentrate the view more upon those most dramatic areas.

I suppose you could experiment with a little bit of Local Contrast Enhancement to increase contrast in the clouds. But I fear this will possibly look 'over processed' if you aren't very careful.

Perhaps losing some of the foreground may help - say move the bottom of the image up about 25% of the height.

I would cut 1/3 off the bottom and then work the sky.

Your opening comment struck a chord here. Same for me, give me a grand scene and I have no idea what to do with it.
So I have now given up and just enjoy the work of people able to visualise wider.
