Great shot Brian,
I.M.O though i would be brutal with a crop to bring more attention to the beastie!
Another Rawtherapee adjustment. This is what autolevels did followed by and adjustment of the black slider. The black adjustment has the same sort of effect as a contrast boost. Lastly the default unsharp mask settings. They are very mild and just crisp up detail a little. There is also a tonal range control on this in Rawtherapee but left as is. Also anti halo which isn't needed. Might come in handy of there are distant trees on a horizon or such like. No need to play with any other settings on this one. Tone mapping could also be used as well but only a little and would also tend to reduce the effect of the black slider.
The black slider needn't be used this much of course and a similar effect could be obtained with it's tone mapping.

okay i can see where this is a major change in the effect the photo has and i like the power of the program. Now don't be laughing too hard at me but as i said i do not find this an intuitive program. Is there a simple way to save changes or do I have to continue to save the changes out of the program?
A simply great image. I agree, John has provided some nice "pop" to provide the subject some prominence, but the key is how great this is from the start.
Trust me Brian if you play with the ones I mentioned you will soon get the hang of it and the rest will seem more natural after those. The main one to get to grips with is the curve. It's almost essential in many shots. It's easy to see what it does by adding points and moving them about. Then it's a case of finding where to put a point and later how many points to add and move about. Up goes lighter down goes darker. left side is dark tones, rights side is light tones. If it's a mess select the straight 45 degree line icon and start again,
Maybe I shouldn't have added the black slider in the exposure tab but under some circumstances it can be very effective. All it is doing is clipping off the darker end and has it's own unique reset icon to or it can be slid back to where it was.
The biggest problem with PP is trying to use to many - and people who reckon jpg's can't be processed.
