    opinions on these two?

I'm a complete beginner and looking to buy a digital SLR camera soon. I'm on a minimum wage budget and hoping to find something I can afford. Black friday is coming up and these two will be on sale at wal mart. They are in my range of money that I can spend possibly. What are any of your guys' thoughts on these two cameras? I've read some reviews, but wondering what you guys think or have heard. Thanks!

The Walmart D5100 price seems pretty good. Here is an ad from B&H (who usually have the lowest prices) and the price for this kit is $796.95...

    opinions on these two?

The Walmart Canon T3 ad doesn't list which lenses come with this kit. I would want to be sure that the latest 18-55mm IS kit lens and the 55-250mm IS II were the lenses.

Since I am a Canon guy, I don't know where the D5100 stands in the Nikon hierarchy of cameras. The Canon T3 however, is a really basic entry level camera and was the least expensive Canon DSLR at the time of introduction. It is is not even the latest model. Being a Canon guy, I cannot say if the Nikon D5100 is inferior to the D5200...

Perhaps some Nikon guys will chime in on this one...

    Re: opinions on these two?

Hope: it is entry level, two lens over a good spread not the best but a good place to start. It would let you see if photography is for you. Good price compared to Richard's B&H price compared to Adorama's price, now if you find that photography is not the thing for you, you could probably sell it for close to what you purchased it for. Only buy an SD card try not to get them to sell you more and also watch out of the extended warranty pitch, camera has 2 year warranty from date of purchase from Nikon and I believe 5 years from date of purchase from Nikon. Their warranty means nothing to the manufacture it is a money maker for the store.

What ever you do go luck.

The D5100 is a good buy at that price. The difference between the two stores is the second lists the kit as having two VR lenses whereas the first kit is with the older none VR versions. Still good quality and the 16mp sensor in the D5100 can run be run at very high ISO's with little or no loss in real world quality so the VR isn't vital.

The D5100 looks equal to 550D or T2i. I would go with the Nikon between these two or look for similar 18 mp 550D or higher.

Abject futility is defined as...comparing camera/lens quality based on internet images.
To expand a little, assuming normal print size and competent photographer...one cannot discern camera/lens brand from a print.

I simply posted my suggestion Nikon D5100 with pictures.

Please take note, without comparing/downplaying any other camera/post/pictures.

Instead of negatively criticizing my suggestion, why not positively post your suggested camera/lens?

    Thanks

Since the B&H and Walmart (regular) "base" prices are roughly equivalent (950 B&H, 899 Walmart), then it is likely (but not certain) that the D5100 offered by Walmart is covered by Nikon USA's normal warranty. Check to be certain. If the "special buy" was not from Nikon USA, then there will be no possibility of getting warranty service from the manufacturer. I don't know Canon's policies in this realm. Anyone?

I was not criticizing your suggestion, merely your assumption that the internet images would speak for themselves. I would assume that Hope has the wisdom to take our advice, coupled with the myriad of camera review sites available, and make the wisest decision for her circumstances. That assumption is based on the fact that she is frequenting this rather august group of exceptional knowledge and wisdom.

    Re: opinions on these two?

the problem is that you are getting two different view points about 2 cameras from different people making it hard to compare. I hope this will help. My husband owned a 450D and I a 60D. We bought a 1100D (T3) as our backup camera. We ensured that all settings were identical and tested them against one another and were shocked to find that the 1100D had sharper and had more natural and nicer colour than the other two. It coped better in low light and showed much less noise than the other two. When we had an opportunity to buy a 5D, he sold his 450D rather than this camera because he enjoyed it so much. So it seems the 1100D is an outstanding model and well worth looking at, and might be better than some cameras that are seen to be not entry level cameras. I should also mention that he chooses this T3 over his full frame camera almost all the time.

If it were me, I'd go with the Nikon D5100. It's quite a bit better than the Canon in both Dynamic Range and ISO performance and the Nikon has 16mp to the Canon's 12mp. I upgraded earlier this year with very much the same improvements over my old camera and I notice the differences more than enough to appreciate. I believe the Nikon is also a step above their equivalent entry model to the Canon.

The only hesitation I'd have about the Nikon is if you actually go to buy it at WalMart on Black Friday, I've seen the videos

I know! I don't do Black Friday shopping, but this is a big save and I'm on a budget! Hopefully, I don't get trampled lol.....

Thank you everyone for all your input!! Like I said before, I am* very* new to everything about photography and I greatly appreciate the feedback. From reading other reviews, watching videos and reading the previous replies, I feel like I'm leaning more towards the Nikon. I have til next week to decide. On the walmart website for the info for the Nikon it says that there is a 1 year manufacturer limited warranty. Does that sound right?

I would go for the Canon. Appears to be a Canon bag so should be decent quality. I would check that the SD card has a reasonable capacity. I would hope it would be 8gb at least. Both these and the other item are needed really. Canon - Nikon, does it make any difference. I doubt it. 12mp 16mp not really in my opinion.

One silly thought. Canon are always offering cash back deals this time of year in the UK. Guess they have a way of not giving these on really discounted items but might be worth a look.

That is a decent bag. I got one free with my XS.I used it for about the first year. Sence I outgrew it I keep my cleaning supplys and some other misc. camera stuff I don't need in my current bags. works great.

    Re: opinions on these two?

There is a big difference between the Canon 12mp sensor and the 16mp one used in the Nikon.

    See here: http://www.dxomark.com/Cameras/Compa...(brand2)/Canon

    Also

The EOS T3/1100D is an entry level camera with many features missing whereas the D5100 is a class up meaning you'd get more life from it. It has a vari-angle screen which is fantastic, it's faster, has better AF, full HD video and if you handle both side-by-side you'd find it has a better viewfinder and superior build. I'm not saying the Canon isn't a good camera but at this price the Nikon wins hands down.
