A Silver Efex Pro 2 question

    Hi,

I am making a more determined effort to understand SEP Pro 2, so this may be a daft question

It is a question about selective colourisation, using SEP as a Lightroom plug-in.

If I take a RAW in LR image, and "edit in SEP Pro 2", LR creates a TIFF and passes it to SEP for processing.

If I then do some selective recolourisation (possible because the TIFF still contains the underlying colour channels) and "save", SEP passes the saved TIFF back to LR (and overwrites the original TIFF).

But, if I then take that TIFF back into SEP, the "original image" has no longer any underlying colour channels - just my selectively recoloured image.

Is this correct? It would help me to understand why.

    Thanks,

    Dave

If I understand your question that seems perfectly logical to me. SEP has taken the TIFF it generated and changed it in the application so therefore the bytes within the TIFF have been altered and re-saved. The same thing would happen if you generated a jpeg from Lightroom, desaturated and re-saved it. Next time you opened the jpeg you would only see the desaturated version. If you use SEP within Photoshop as a smart object then your colour information is still there and you can re-change as you will. Did I understand your question .... ?

Yes, thanks, you are quite right and it really wasn't a very bright question. I've been working with a parametric editor too long!

The jpeg Lightroom question is a little more involved, as you probably know, but for non LR users - if you edit a jpeg within LR then it's all parametric and the information is preserved, as soon as you export the jpeg, they become baked in

Thanks for information about smart objects, I had been wondering about that. Unfortunately I only have PSE which doesn't support them (as Donald remarked in a recent thread)

    Thanks again.
