    Some with new hardware

Went nuts the other day and am still kicking myself for going nuts like that but... it is fun to use. Dang heavy though.

Oh, that is about the Canon 200-400/f4 +1.4TC and the 1D-X. Won't be primary which will still be the 5D3 + 70-300L that I use on walkabouts.

Only used it a couple of times. These are some of the pics. All taken with the extender engaged @560mm.

    1. Light not gone but fading fast. Dark bird against dark was problematic for the shutter speed used 1/2000 but thought that grabbing the light side might look nice.

    2. Doing their thing. Nothing can escape from the 1D-X

Nah. I'll blame Sharon that I do like it. The reflections are mesmerizing, especially the way you have post-processed it.

Thanks, it is perhaps a tad better than the 5D3 but just a tiny bit. But has the same issues as any other camera. Dark against dark background, dark backlit, light against light background etc. Still learning it though.

    Thanks Steven.

Thanks Dan - have to start squirreling before I can do that. 16k nuts are going to take awhile

Thanks Mike - bird wise it is unusual to get a shot like this because they do not normally congregate - competition for fish! I have seen this sort of scene before but a properly exposed shot would have just shown a mass of birds and a drab background. So many different angles of white would have certainly blown the highlights on many of them. So this time I waited until the sun had gone past the trees and then exposed only for the white which darkened up the fore and background. In post pulled the dark all the way back and got this. Pretty simple shot overall. Later only did a small curves adjustment and noise reduction.

The AF system has a separate CPU and is highly tunable.

Here's a link to a 47 page AF user guide if you haven't got it already:

Thanks I did go over it with the 5D3 skipping the 1DX specifics. Thanks for reminding me about this one.

No worries. Firmware 2.00 out in Jan for the 1D X - should improve AF even more. Not sure if they'll so the same for 5D3.

    Re: Some with new hardware

Yes heard about that. Gives me at least more time to get used to the differences. There was a gap between the last firmware updates so there may be some for the 5D3. Things like EV in Manual which Nikons could possibly go into both but there are things under the hood that may not result in the same type of updates.

One thing I did find sort of odd on the new one - in single shot, the shutter seems to whir rather than click. Sort of like 3 shots in quick succession. Notice that on yours?

Bobo, those are up to your usual standards, ie, great.
But I gotta ask...why the 1DX when you have the 5D MkIII, what are you gaining?

    Re: Some with new hardware

    Thanks John, appreciated as always.

Thanks ??? (I still cannot decide whether to call you chauncey, wm, William, Bill, Will)....

Why - well 12 vs 6 burst rate. But it was more the ability of the 1DX to hold and maintain focus on objects coming headon. The 5D3 has a slight problem with that especially if there is a lack of contrast. The 1DX on the other hand has a secondary rgb processor that reads colour information to assist the AF. In other respects they are the same.

    That is the "technical excuse".

I was waiting for the 200-400 lens to come out to make up for the loss of range when switching from the 550D to the 5D3. The 1DX just happened. Actually I had already looked at the 1DX at the same time as the 5D3 but was concerned about the weight so got the lighter one. Now I can do single-handed with the 5D3. Wont be possible with the new combo but who knows...

The one gripe I have so far against the 1DX is that it does not rest as well in the palm as does the 5D3.

Thought it was 14 FPS. Anyway, 12 or 14, it is quite fast!

    Re: Some with new hardware

Default is 12 and can be set to 14 if you do not mind the shutter remaining open during the entire sequence. I am not sure what that entails but does not sound good...

The other thing is you can set the burst rate to lower, even 2.

If it's in "S" drive mode it'll do that. "S" is for silent. The regular drive mode for single shot is just the single square.

Could that be what you're meaning?
