Well, there they are. I had fun learning and I had a lot of photos that came out too dark, too light, out of focus and everything in between lol...still learning. These photos are mostly what I'm already familiar with taking pictures of, but I'm hoping to get myself to think more "photographically" and see things differently. Just wanted to share and see what you all have to say!

Yes. we can all see you are giving the new camera a bit of trial.

I like the tree. Obviously the lighting for the gecko or lizard was very dull so the focus range (depth of field) was limited. Looking forward to seeing some masterpieces in the future.

Well done with this set of images !

It is obvious that you have done a fair bit of studying in readiness and it has paid off. All images are reasonably well exposed, sharp and I see you have used manual settings for all Very basic simple post processing gives them all a bit more 'punch', if wanted.

The lizards are extremely good considering the lighting and hand held at 1/20s, f4 and an ISO4000 and you got the focus spot on with the eyes.

So now you have a good idea of the image quality your kit can give you so you need something to stretch the challenge. How about some outside shots, landscape or building scenes incorporating some sky to get you thinking about the exposure to deal with the lighting range you will encounter?

Take a look at this post on The Adventures of Mojo for inspiration and take the adorable figurine in your last shot on a photo expedition around your house, workplace, the neighborhood, your favorite restaurant or wherever your heart desires and your camera takes you. You could get really creative and create a fun set of images while working on composition, depth of field, and just generally getting comfortable with the settings on your camera.

Shane beat me to itThat's my project. It is all shot in overcast weather So far because of the ball is white and glares easily. Try one it is fun!

Hi Hope - and welcome to the CiC forums from me.

Here are three ideas to take better pictures (applies to any camera)

1) Pay attention to the subject in the composition - e.g. you probably want to frame the dog without chopping off his/her paws in #5 or rump and legs in #3

2) Pay attention to the background too, try to exclude things that don't 'contribute' to the composition - e.g. the thing top centre of the first gecko shot (#1)

3) When you can, shoot at the level of the subject, as you did in #3 and #6, but didn't in #5

Hi Hope, Congratulations on your new camera and on your first photo post ! Everyone has already said what I would have said except "keep shooting, Keep posting, and don't let any negative comments that you might receive put you off."

The three pointers from Dave are extremely valid and often separate more experienced (more skillful) photographers from others.

Don't get so involved with your subject that you forget to look at the borders of the image to ensure that you are not cutting off anything such as the feet of a dog. Also view the borders of the image to ensure that some unwanted thing or person is not intruding into your image.

In addition to your subject, look over the background to eliminate busy distracting backgrounds and or things like trees or poles growing from your subject's head.

Finally, kids and dogs look better when shot from their eye level...
