Here is the original, as you can see the massive head and eyes are really very tiny. I didn't even inow what I had got until I came in and put it on the bigger screen.

There should be enough detail showing to get part way along the identification road.

I can rule out a few families but can't place it. Obviously something which we don't see in the UK.

I've never seen one with such a disproportionate head, but it looks like some kind of hoverfly. Generally, they look somewhat like bees or wasps from the neck down, but the eyes and antennae give them up as flies. Here is a slightly OOF shot of one type of hoverfly:

I found a very good photo of the same type of hoverfly and it was taken in Australia. Thanks for the heads up. I would have posted it but i am unsure of reposting rules here.
