    Street shots

I do like street photography, but I do not have the eye for it. Taking a suggestion from the many articles I have read on street photography, I decided to play the waiting game. I think I waited for about three hours for the first pix, while the second pix was about half an hour. Out of the many shots taken, I think these two are presentable as street photography.

Any input, good or bad is more than welcome.

The first one's really bloody good. Textbook example of Bresson's decisive moment concept. There's tension, peculiar emotion, a very cool inversion of the man's and the boy's clothes, and amidst it all, a huge advertisement. Sounds exactly like a city in microcosm to me.

My one qualm is that the blacks look crushed. No detail in the gent's shirt. The composition is so strong that I'm definitely nit-picking - that's literally the only way I can see to improve this. I do not think calling it masterful is an exaggeration. And yeah, maybe you're just starting out and you got lucky. But you still nailed it.

I'm going to PM you about buying a print.

#1 rocks, Steven. If you come out with anything better in the next 12 months you'll be doing well.

#2 is a little weaker, as my eyes are drawn to the other people in the background. That's just one of those things, and can't be helped.

Good on you for your patience - I'm more of a wandering street photog rather than a hunter with that amount of patience! Still, every now and again I come across a backdrop which just needs things to fall into place. Textures, symmetry, and juxtaposition always work well.

I think a little bit of a vignette would help with that.

Sometimes, and yes. Street photography seems to require, more than anything, an eye for compositions that appear briefly from juxtapositions of millions of people, objects, and settings. The fact that everything constantly changes is what makes street work such a rich subject, but you're at the whims of the city, so you need a little luck.

that was my first waiting game. Previously, I use to wonder and with an untrained eye many of my photos were crap. So, considering the hours I spent wondering it was very satisfying with these two shots esp, the first one 8) even though I spent the whole afternoon sitting and waiting for things to happen.
