Trees in a morning fog

Kevin I took the liberty to crop as I suggested to show you the 16x9 crop. I took your first image and changed the crop to a 16x9 constrained crop, when I moved the crop rectangle to the top it cropped off a bit of the foreground. If you wish me to remove the example I will, I can show better than I can explain.

I think all of them are good. I prefer #2 but not by much. The panorama treatment Joe has above works - I certainly think the left hand tree adds to the photograph so I did not go for the version where it was cropped out.

I can live with this much pano, Joe. This is about the same as my 2nd crop, and I really think that tree on the left must remain. thanks for taking the time you did, and I'm always appreciative of other edit suggestions.

Lovely images Kevin...we get sea spray ad vog (volcanic fog - more like pollution) here but no fog which makes me enjoy these mystical images all the more. Thank you for sharing them.

All three are fantastic images! Any particular reason you shot them at such a small aperture? Would something like f/8 or f/11 not have worked?

Good question, Murat. I was using aperture priority, wanted to keep these dark (silhouette). I wanted to go at least f/22 in case I could emphasize any starbright rays that might show through, and this is such a soft scene I wasn't worried about losing resolution to diffraction.

Kudos, Kevin, for seeing the possibilities in the soggy and dim morning and getting out there and having a go at it. All nice - as is the case for many others, the composition makes #1 the fav for me. The only time you regret taking your camera out, is when you don't.

Thanks, Mark. My variation to that theme (and makes my wife roll her eyes) is: "The only time I KNOW I won't get a shot is when I leave the camera at home" Cliché may be boring, but it's also true.

Masterful work. Certainly you put the effort in to get there at the right time, and were rewarded with superb photographic conditions. A lot of various comps could be used, I have no comments beyond what others have said in that aspect.

My personal thought, a little outside of the box, would be to go back again in similar conditions if possible, and shoot a solo shot of the left side tree from shot 1. It is magnificent and would surely make a glorious photo isolated against the fog. For a preview, just use your hands to do a vertical crop of the tree on your monitor. I, for one, am dying to see such a shot.

Thanks very much, Matt. I think isolating the left tree may be a great idea, and today may represent some opportunity: we are in the middle of an ice storm to be followed by 6 inches of snow- might be some real uniqueness mixed in there, depending on whether the sun can make some contribution. Hopefully more to follow.

Thanks very much for making the time and effort with your edit. I think the crop works very nicely, and I don't find the background to be cluttered at all. It's not the same warm temperature of light, but I can easily adjust that. Thanks, again. Kevin

Hello; I really like your photos and I cannot come up with anything to say other than "wow." Fog and misty days are my favorite effects for photography. You have the sun in them and how the mist affects the light great.

These are awesome shots! I particularly love trees, so these all speak to me. If I HAD to pick a favorite, it'd be #1, I love the road and darkness leading to the light. :thumbup:
