Got a new Canon EF100mm f/2.8 Macro USM yesterday. Have just been trying it out around the house.

Handheld, as I didn't have a tripod to hand. EOS450D, 1/160th sec, f3.5, ISO200.

I agree with ricko, but I think the orchid would look even better with more light directly on the front. Now there's more light comming from the left and the bright out-of-focus leaf on the left draws some of the attention.

and, by the way, congratulations with your new lens I think you'll have some fun with that one.

Thank you for the comments. Have not had a fast prime before and so far it seems a very nice lens and I think I will get some good use out of it. As well as macro, should double as a good portrait lens too.

I will have another look in PS following your comments and see what I can do. Looking again I agree the flower to the left and some of the stalks are a little distracting!

That is a good capture, although I agree with the comments above on cloning and the bright patch, etc.

And I'm really thinking I need a lens like that

I'm not that familiar with these blooms; but to my eyes it looks just a tad over-sharpened, possibly due to needing a slightly higher threshold, there seems to be a lot of frosty detail. However, as I said, I'm not familiar with them, so maybe they are really like that - I could be wrong.
