What is "pet eye", is it the same as "red eye" in people? Posting an image would make it easier to come up with suggestions.

If I am right about the issue, the best fix it to avoid using the on-camera flash, as these are placed too close to the optical axis of the lens and cause the problem in first place. I'm not sure if it will work, but have you tried the red eye reduction functionality in PS, because if that works, it is probably the easiest thing to do. Anything else will take a bit more effort (selecting the spot and applying black to it and then dialing it back to give it some dimensionality).

Re: Pet eye or white eye.

I never have white/blue/green eye problems with my imagery because I never shoot indoors with direct flash. I always bounce a hotshoe flash (usually off the ceiling) and modify it with a Joe Demb Flash Diffuser Pro. This will eliminate virtually all the green eye problems.

I do frequently work with images shot by our rescue volunteers which do have that problem. The quickest solution is to use the clone stamp tool at the size of the dogs eye and at 100%. Select a black area in the image and clone that area over the green eye. I then will clone a tiny white area and fake catch lights in the eyes. This does not work well enough for larger images but is a make do situation which will suffice for the small images used on our rescue sites.

Another way to avoid the problem is not to shoot the dog looking into the camera. If the dog is looking a bit off to the side, the flash will not be reflected back from the dog's retina.

I did a test shot using a Pixco Diffuser over the built-in flash. That seemed to help a bit.

The Pixco Diffuser doesn't provide studio quality lighting when using the built-in flash but, for $3 U.S. Dollars it might be worth considering...

Joe Demb has brought out a pair of Pop-Up, Flip-It Flash Reflectors
( http://www.dembflashproducts.com/popup/ ) which might work. I have not personally used this rig but, I love Joe Demb's other flash products such as the Flash Diffuser Pro and the Photojournalist Flip-It. I would expect that this rig might work fairly well but, you must consider that you are working with a flash which doesn't have a lot of power.

I have also experimented with reducing the green eye effect in post processing by using the NIK Software Viveza plug in. Placing a control point on each eye with the radius of the control point at approximately the same size as the green eye, you can play around with saturation, color and brightness to a point in which the green eye is reduced to an acceptable point...

I assume, Denise, that you mean a strong greenish colour to the eyes.

If so, you could try selecting the problem areas and desaturating slightly. There are a number of similar procedures for 'normal red eye' reduction.

Hi Richard many thanks for all your suggestions. I just thought there may have been a quick fix method. I guess I will go back to using the PS method of darkening the pupils and then adding highlights. Thank you for being a dog rescuer.
