Just a stump
I worked with this picture quite a bit and I like the way the texture in the stump turned out. Tell me what you think.

Re: Just a stump
Looking at that stump and living in South Australia which is a dessert state I can feel the hot winds blowing across it.
A great capture.
Cheers Colin.

Re: Just a stump
Hi Tim,
A very good subject you have here with a lot of potential.
When shooting subject like this you really want to make the stump the main subject hitting the viewer in the face. You don’t want the image to be “soft”, it has to be sharply in focus showing the texture of the stump. Lots of texture ask for B&W conversion. Yes, some images work better in B&W.
Looking at the image the cut part closest to the camera is OOF, that should actually be in focus. Using Manual Focus looking trough the viewfinder, carefully inspecting your subject before releasing the shutter will give you a pretty good idea of what is important to have in focus.
Disregarding some “rules” of composition, sometimes works better for some images. Getting in much closer to your subject will isolate it from the surrounding area placing more emphasis on the main subject.
I took the liberty of doing an edit on this image. If you do not agree with me, say so.

Re: Just a stump
Andre, thanks for the critique. I am always looking for ways to make things better and this really helps me. The one thing that you might have noticed is that it is not completely b/w. I purposely left a slight bit of color in it, just cause I liked the effect. Your edit is great though and thanks again.
