Post THE 2013 Shot that means the most to you.

As 2013 draws nearer and nearer to a close, I thought I'd invite members to post the single one image that they created in the last year that means the most to them. It might be their best shot, or it might be special for other reasons -- I'll leave it up to you.

    I'll go first ...

This is the house I grew up in, some 50+ years ago. It was built by my Mum and Dad - and when I say "built by Mum and Dad" I don't mean "they had it build for them", I mean they actually built it themselves - from timber that they milled themselves - in a sawmill they built themselves (driven off the tractor PTO) - milled from trees Dad planted on the family farm when he was a kid. While they were building the initial stages they stayed in a caravan that they built themselves. In later years Dad added a pool; we couldn't get a digger down the drive so it was "out with the spade and wheel-barrow to create a 22,000 gallon pool. I guess you could say that they we're one of the DIY generation; all without a mortgage too.

Dad passed away over 20 years ago, but Mum hung in there until early this year - remaining in the house for all but the last 4 or 5 months - well into her 90's. So after 60+ years, the house needed to be sold -- all that's left now are the photos and memories. I was able to stay there one last time last Christmas, so took the opportunity to take some last photos. This particular shot is a 5 photo HDR composite shot into the morning sun, early in the morning. This is the view I'd get whenever turned the last corner of the driveway returning home. It's almost been a year now since I was last there, but it still almost seems surreal to think that someone else owns it now.

I hope it brings them as many memories and good times as it brought me. Cheers Mum & Dad -- thanks for everything. You done good.

That's awesome, Colin. Don't know if I have anything that can measure up after that opener. It will take some thought. Much easier to pick the "best" shot of the year versus the one that means the most. Hmmmm...

Pretty little place, Colin...my only nit is the electrical wire coming in from the top. Maybe you can photoshop it out?

    Thanks Isabel,

I could easily clone out the wire, but I wouldn't want to -- it's very much part of the history, from worrying about being electrocuted by it when painting next to it on a ladder as a kid to learning to fly my RC helicopter over it just last Christmas.

Many memories in that old bit of wire

Colin that is an amazing story. You think of it - there is not an inch on that land you have not left a footprint.

I had so many that I could run a thread, not all marvels of photography but different styles for me. This one was taken on vacation in heavy fog while recovering (day two) from a pulled ligament in the middle of vacation.

    Ah grand kids

Thing I'm looking forward to is looking after them for a few hours and then feeding them full of sugar just before handing them back. PAYBACK!!!

Seems a shame to follow Andre's happy occasion with a somewhat sad one but this was taken just a couple of weeks before we lost 'Piper' - however we still have a couple of more Rough Collies and they continue to keep us on the go.

Cool stuff John, it reminded me of a Joe McNally shot from the Empire State Building - have you seen his "getting high" compilation?

    Sorry to hear Steve,

I photographed a dog last year for a client shortly before it had to be poor down - and some shots of it's younger companion. Not too long after that the other dog died too. It's a cruel world -- the owners were very grateful for the photos (I think they paid the bill AND gave me chocolates for that shoot!).

Yes, the scoreboard in the background was deliberate. Technically imperfect, but the moment and composition made it my favorite.

    Colin,

Thanks for the comment. I've seen some of his works, not necessarily that compilation. I'll definitely check it out. Thanks for the link.

Wow! Very nice images. I am surprised there have been only 71 responses since 2009.

From your other photos it looks like Roller Derby is right up there with Ice Hockey for "push and shove"! I just don't know how they do it -- I'm afraid that my balance for things like skates and boards is pretty much zero - I constantly feel like I'm on ball bearing that are on ice

Some people don't like his work, but I feel he's a true master of his craft. Have you got his book "The Moment it Clicks"? I found it very inspiring -- I've taken many images since reading that book that I've liked a lot better.

Just finished picking out some of the year's best shots for out Photography & Fitness group's Pot Luck. The image I am most proud of didn't make it for the CIC as it was out by 1 month 3 day, it was a shot that everything just lined up for just a short few minutes before it was gone. Now the best in 2013 was one I took down in Hocking Hills State Park in Ohio just outside of Columbus. At first I was not sure about it, working on the image, it started slowly moving me towards a "Middle Earth/Hobbit" feel, that is the sense I get from it. I was nervous about posting it as I had taken it in Kevin's (kdocs) back yard so to speak, he had given me directions to all the good places and you all have seen the images he takes at Hocking Hills. There is another shot that I took in the spring up in Algonquin Park everything in it just sings I mean sings. Put the two together side by side and my eyes keep coming back to the Hocking Hills shot.

    Cheers: Allan

    Working With Glass:

The photo below was taken at a craft centre, in what were formerly the stables of a country mansion, which I visited during a holiday in Devon back in July. It shows a skilled glass blower, concentrating on rolling a lump of molten glass to make it spherical before blowing. The only lighting was the natural daylight coming through the open stable door behind her.

Its significance for me is that it was chosen by an independent judge as the winning monochrome print in the October competition at the Photography Club of which I am a member. I started this hobby and joined the club in 2011, and this was my first winning image.

Well, I suppose this is the image that means the most to me. This was my very first picture taken with my first, brand new DSLR. I stood in line for two hours the night before to buy it on black Friday (not a fan of black Friday, but it was worth it this time). I was excited to create a blurry background and this is what I did for my first shot. I'm still learning a lot about photography, but I will always cherish this image! It's the beginning of my photography journey Because of a suggestion from another member, this little guy now rides around in my camera bag and will have his own set of images Post THE 2013 Shot that means the most to you.

    Hi Allan,

That's a nice shot, but if you what to post the other shot that "didn't quite make the time frame", go right ahead. What the heck, it's Christmas!
