Excellent job. I would like the leftmost butterfly to be just a teeny bit brighter.

Hi Nandakumar, The butterflies are beautiful but almost lost in the background because much of the butterfly is black against dark brown. You didn't mention what your goal was for this image so please take these suggestions with a grain of salt if your views move in a different direction than mine do. I would prefer to see the subjects stand out and draw the viewer's attention a bit more. I don't recall if you do any post processing or not but if so, here are a thought or two to consider.

If you could lighten the background a bit, the difference would help make the butterflies stand out and be easier to see. Also, if the background were not as sharp as the butterflies it could really make the impact of the butterflies pop. I might also be tempted to tone down the bright blue spot in the upper left corner as it tends to take the eye away from the subject.

Hope this helps if you would like to move the image in that direction.

What an interesting contrast of warm and cold colors! Mother Nature indeed!

I agree with Frank and am glad to see him posting again. Also strongly consider getting rid of the really bright spots in the background, especially the long one in the top left corner. Do anything you can to keep the background relatively uniform so nothing distracts the viewer's eye from the subject.

Well said and well demonstrated. The repost is a slight improvement IMO.

I'm guessing there was not a lot of light here. When you consider that as photographers all we have to play with is focus, exposure and composition, and when you have a natural subject like the butterflies, you never know when they will flit off. I think this is a great shot. Well spotted and captured.

    Clive,
Thank you very much; actually the herd were almost static except for minor flights to adjacent positions; i was told they gather nutrients from soil that way....heard about that? regards

The improvement in your image helps!

Very interesting observation Nandakumar. Last year I saw 10-20 moths? doing exactly the same thing in a patch of mud by the side of the road. Perhaps the nutrient theory is correct as I couldn't see anything that might be food but if disturbed they would return to the same patch of mud within a few seconds. Not sure if these are moths or butterflies as I have not seen them before or since. I hope you don't mind me posting a shot of what I saw that day...

Beautiful, Nandakumar. I do think the first is too dark somehow, and the re-do improbably bright, but for the life of me don't have a useful suggestion as to how improve this. Partly, the difficulty may lie in Mike Buckley's apt comment on the juxtaposition of warm and cool. One needs one thing and the other another, maybe? But lovely in any case.

    Nice, Frank.

I could be wrong but my guess is that there is a little dab of pheromone in there. These beauties are usually deeply troubled by the mating urge and will travel long distances upwind one tickled by a molecule or two of the right scent.

Wonderful translucence - nature's own stained glass windows. Whatever the post processing technicalities I imagine it was just a privilege to be there to take the shot. Beautiful - well done.

The revision works much better for me and is well worth your effort to change it.

The butterflies have a phosphorescent look that I'm not used to seeing, so I'm not sure how I want the image to look. If that's also true for you, you could benefit from revisiting this photo from time to time over the years as you develop more and more confidence in what you want your images to look like in general, in your post-processing skills, and then what you want this very unique image to look like.

I'm sure you're right about the butterflies seeking the nutrients in the soil and plants. I was in the Amazon once and our guide was a scientist who was conducting groundbreaking research on butterflies there. We were floating on a wooden raft on a lake at sunrise and butterflies were all over the raft. She explained that they were attracted by the nutrients in the wood.
