John I took your original image and did a little adjustments to bring the bears out a little better. I used CS6, however I believe you can do almost the same in Elements. What I did would go something like this in elements: work the shot in it's raw converter name and save as PSD file. Open that file in Elements, go back to saved raw file and reopen, work the bears do not worry about background, new name and save as PSD file. Now open in Elements, Select>All, Edit>copy (now go to first file) Edit>Paste, this should paste the second image on a new layer above the first layer. Now using the quick select tool, select the bears only, now Select>Refine Edge adjust the edges, once done Ctrl-j to copy to a new layer. Now Filter>Other>High Pass select a number between 1 to 3 OK, now go to blending mode select Overlay or one of the other blends. Next a Curves Adjustment layer where I reset the black point.
I hope that is meets with your approval
Cheers: Allan
