    wide open at f1.4

I was in dark woods taking advantage of a brief break in the rain. When I came across this shot of a 10 pointer. Normally I am reserved about taking a deer shot that has his backend forward to me. I did here because I really liked the composition. I like the brook down the left side and the position of the 2 trees lends a depth that I liked. I shot this with my T2i and my fifty mm. Fstop 1.4 1/250 a sec. iso 800

It is indeed a nice setting and a nice buck. Pretty darn good for 50mm. You must be sneaky.

Very nice image and a fine feature sketch of the animal

Great capture James. It's good to see a different view than the regular side or head on shot.

Sometimes it isn't possible to use the settings that you would have wished. But this has come out well, despite difficult conditions.

You must have been downwind, and the deer must have been deaf. No time to change the lens either

When I am looking for deer I like to move very slowly. During the rut I find their scrapes and hide behind a tree or in a drainage ditch or in the tall grass. I also wear camouflage, I do everything I used to do when I used to hunt. Sometimes I just pick a big game trail and sit. All my deer shots are the results of patience.
Ken I wear unscented clothing or use scent blockers. In this shot it was during a rain (thus I didn't have my 50D and 200mm with me) And I can move very quietly when its wet. normally I carry my 50mm on my T2i and my 200mm on my 50D when I go looking for deer. I hardly ever use my 400 for deer anymore.
    Thanks all.
