House cat gone feral, captured with the 500mm

On my first shoot with the new 500mm f4 IS II, I came upon this house cat in the wildlife park. It appeared to have adopted the "feral" lifestyle, as it was quite skinny and was hunting things in the grass. It had absolutely gorgeous eyes. What better way to improve my wildlife photography than to shoot photos of animals, right?

Unfortunately, every time I got low to the ground and started to shoot photos, the cat came running straight at me, wanting me to pet it. I couldn't get fast enough shutter speeds to freeze the running cat, so I was disappointed that I couldn't get action shots. I got one photo of the cat looking at me, albeit with a horrible background, and it moved slightly, so the photo is soft at 100%.

However, I simply had to share the image, because, despite the technical messups and poor background, I absolutely love the image and it looks OK small. I did a very quick and dirty edit, blurred some of the bg a bit, etc. I will go back to the park soon, and I hope the cat is there again so I can try for the images I really want.

She is beautiful...'don't mind the blurred side but the face shows a lot of texture, sharpness and colour. For a coloured photo of a cat, I love that very much.

Well this version looks pretty darn good, Matt. Right down to the water drop on the whisker and the texture in the pretty green eyes. You're doing the right thing. Get that gear out and shoot with it.

Very well done indeed. Absolutely gorgeous. But of course the magic of primes...

Since you are going back, perhaps take some food? Winter, in the wild, is not going to be good for that cat that wants you to pet it. Or, get it to a new home or adopt it yourself?

I don't care how cute it is, anything in a wildlife park running towards me will get me going in the opposite direction.

Nice image. Pets do love the camera.
