    Just a young Bull Elk

Elk visit the south slopes of the canyon I live in for winter browse, and this one, with his new rack just starting, was on the way back to more remote summer pasturing. Being stuck at 200mm for the present, with these critters being very shy, getting close enough for a decent image is tough. So I was pleased to get close enough for this one.
But it is pretty boring, and I can't think of anything to make it better. It illustrates that wildlife is more than getting close enough - unless anyone has any suggestions.

Hi Mark, the way I addressed that issue on a limited budget was to get a Canon SX40 for times when a longer reach was needed. That camera has been updated to the SX50 model that, in 35mm equivalent terms can reach 1,200mm for under $350.

Frank, Thanks. Interesting... Beats $3K and up for more millimeters for my D600. Sharp with good color rendition at longer lengths in your experience?

It has been for me, Mark. My SX40 only reaches to 840mm but that is almost 3 times what I can reach with my D3100 with the 300m lens on it. There are other factors to consider such as the slower shooting speed, 12MP verses the 14MP in the Nikon, and it is a bridge camera, not a DSLR. On the other hand it does have a viewfinder and it has some features I don't have on my Nikon. For me, it is the best camera I have for long shots where my 300mm lens can't cope even with cropping the image.

The SmugMug link in my signature below has the images posted there with the cameras I've used to get the images if you would like to do some image comparison.

    Hope this helps!
