    Definitely a head on shot

I decided to give rawtherapee one more try. If i keep my tweaks to a minimum and don't get fancy it works well?

done in Gimpshop with 100 stacks and some other tweaks. Not the same original but very close

Switching back and forth in Lyte Box it is fairly easy to see exactly where the improvements have been made. The PP version is sharper, more detailed and a bit more vibrant. Even the web is sharper! Looks good Brian!

    Hi Brian,

Your processing has added a bit of noise from the original image and we know that your camera performs pretty noise free at ISO100. I'm wondering if you have over-sharpened this as to be honest the original is pretty sharp based upon the spiky hairs on its legs.

Here's your original with a very slight mod on levels/brightness with a bit of sharpening. Not saying this is better but just shows what can be done when you start with a good sharp image as this one was SOOC.

This has to be one of you sharpest and I wonder if a bit of localised dodging around his head may help show those eyes off.

    Hi Brian,

Within your PP software you should have a tool called 'Dodge' and one called 'Burn'. These allow you to selectively paint with a brush over an area which you wish to 'lighten' or 'darken'.

I no longer have Rawtherapee loaded but pretty sure it will have something equivalent, I'll do some investigation.

    Edit .................................................. ...
I recall you are using Gimp following RAW conversion so the tools may be in there.

On my mod I slightly lightened around the head area that was in shadow, you will notice that it's lighter under the eye area.

Your original is sufficiently sharp to effect fine non-destructive editing. Gimp has the dodge/burn tool.
I will prefer a little more blur especially to the flower, a little more dof will enhance the effect.

    Brian,

I see you have snuck this third image in with a rather cryptic comment. Can you explain the procedure '100 stacks' that you have found as the sharpness of this one is pretty darn good based on the spiky leg hairs !

Hi Grahame, gimpshop allows for stacking shots. ideally they would all have a slightly different area of focus. hen when they are stacked everything sharpens us. (astrophotography technique). This hot started off sharp and this eems to have helped it along a bit.
