Crossing the Omo River in a dugout canoe

This is one of my favourite shots from our visit to the Omo Valley; a picture of my wife as we were crossing the Omo River in a dugout canoe. The cable ferry that was normally used was out of service; washed away from its moorings and damaged during rainy season. The only way to cross the Omo River was the old fashioned way...

Is it a smile or...is she really saying "What in the name of gawd almighty am I doing here?"

That's an excellent shot. Technically, quite a challenge as there looks to be quite a dynamic range of light in the scene. I think the composition is perfect. I couldn't imagine it being any better.

And then there's the whole social history aspect of it. No tourist tat here. This looks and feels like the genuine article, with that canoe being something that's used day in- day out by local people in their lives, not just a nice quaint thing for tourists.

Hey man...if I am sitting down like that with all her gears (or were they yours?) I will not be smiling...but she IS smiling....so there must be something good to say about being uncomfortable...

Actually, I think she is smiling at me trying to take the picture without falling out of the canoe. For those of you that have never been in one, they are quite tippy, and dugouts don't seem to be a lot less stable than regular canoes.

On the other hand, I think she is wondering why we paid good money for the experience....l

It was the only way to get to the Dasanaach village on the west side of the Omo River, and they were a very photogenic group!
