    Experimenting with water droplets

A shot I got while experimenting with capturing water droplets falling in the bathtub. Just wanted to share, any input appreciated : )

I've never tried dripping droplets. It looks like you have the basic technique right to capture the image. What lighting did you use?

I just used the ambient light from both light fixtures in the bathroom and then I edited the photo to brighten it a little. Thanks for looking

Drops can be fun. What I do sometimes Is to take a hand pump mister bottle outside and find a nice leaf or twig.

    Merry Christmas

Maybe you could experiment with some colored backgrounds to disguise the bath tub. Just a thought

    Keep up the good work!

As an FYI thingy...Glycerin works great in place of water and if tends to give somewhat larger droplets.
Use it with a mister, as described above, or, for a more directed droplet, use a syringe with a 30 gauge needle attached. A flower makes a good backdrop with a dramatic scene in the droplet!

Is this to say you did not use a flash? How did you time releasing the shutter; just watch and hope for luck as you squeezed the shutter release? What sort of shutter speed? I'm asking all these questions because this looks like fun and I want to have a go at it.

Hi Hope! If you are interested in water drop photography, there is a (several actually) kit you can get to help you set up to take a wide range of interesting drip patterns. You may want to take a look at the following link for more information. Last time I looked, it was just a tad too expensive for such a limited range of photographs but you might be fascinated by some of the images they show as examples if you haven't already seen them.

My mistake....I did use a flash for this one. I took a whole lot of shots and I thought this was one that I didn't use a flash, I used the pop up flash on my camera, plus the bathroom lights.

I thought this shot was without the flash, but I now realize it was one of the shots that I had used the flash. My settings were as follows: 55 mm, 5.6 aperture, 1/60 exposure time, ISO 800. Honestly, it was just luck I think that I caught some of these. It was probably my second or third time ever even using my DSLR! My tub faucet is a little leaky sometimes and I just thought I'd try to capture some drops.

    Re: Experimenting with water droplets

    Hope and others,

Look up TriggerTrap, a new company funded through Kickstarter who are releasing a range of photographic triggers which are somewhat more affordable than many currently available. I have one ordered, but cannot comment yet as they are only just going into production. I will post some later in the New Year when I have had a chance to play with it. Sound triggers, Light triggers, Movement triggers, IR triggers etc etc are part of the range. Maybe for next years Christmas list…...
