    RAW question

Hi everyone, I have just taken, for the first time, some images in raw. When I put them into Elements 11 they show up with the extension .jpg I thought that they would have a different extension. Does this mean that the images are raw in the camera but are being converted to jpeg for editing? I set the camera to raw, not raw & jpeg. This is probably a basic question but I am asking because I don't know....can anyone explain this to me?

    Re: RAW question

Sounds a bit odd, Rita. If you look in your file system, what extensions do the files have?

Assuming that your camera is supported in PSE, just opening a RAW file should open the image for editing in Camera Raw, with whatever your RAW file extension name is.

How does it open? (you might like to tell us what camera your are using.)

    Re: RAW question

Hi Dave, I looked at the metadata in elements and it says it is a jpeg image. I am using an Olympus EM-5 (mft). How do I find out if elements supports the camera I have edited jpegs in elements before?
When I go into elements it opens the image like it normally does, starts with organizer and then I go into editor. Hope this reply makes some kind of sense.

    Rita,

Based on your response to Dave, it seems to me that you might have set your camera to create JPEG files even though you thought you changed the setting to create RAW files. Check that camera setting again.

Elements and all editing software will support the use of any JPEG file, regardless of the camera or software that was used to create it.

    Re: RAW question

Hi Mike, I double checked and the camera is set on raw. I am just not sure why when I put the images in elements 11 that they show up as .jpeg when they are shot in raw? Are they still raw even though the extension says .jpeg?

    Re: RAW question

I'm stumped, Rita. I don't use Elements 11 so I don't know what is going on. I'm sure there is a reasonable explanation but I'll let others figure it out to avoid confusion.

It would help if you would report to the thread what your computer's operating system says the file extensions are -- MFT or JPEG.

I don't know the answer to your question (sorry), but wonder if there are some clues within the discussion in this link. I am not at all technical and I don't know if whether you are using a PC or a MAC has any role in this.

Maybe other people will be able to point out any relevance of this discussion to the issue your highlighting.

Mike, the file extension showing in my computer is .jpeg.

We are all struggling a bit. Going back a stage, how did you transfer the images from your camera to your computer?

Is it possible you have the camera set to RAW and jpeg fine? Also, are you converting the files to RAW using View NX2? I'm only on PSE8 and it doesn't convert RAW files, perhaps version 11 does.

It appears that Version 11 does convert RAW files. Another possibility is you have PSE11 set to convert RAW to jpeg.

Hi John, the camera is set to raw only. I don't know about converting the files, are you saying that they could be automatically being converted?

Dave, I put the card into my computer and selected the files I wanted to transfer.

    Re: RAW question

    Rita,
your file extension should be .orf when opening in PSE11 you will need to open this file using 'Open as' you will then see open as camera raw, use this to open you picture, the .orf is supported and you picture will open raw; make any adjustments then confirm you want PSE11 to open your raw picture by selecting 'Open image'. PSE11 will then open the picture so you can make further adjustments.
You must have a file extension .orf.

    Re: RAW question

Just one more thought if you use 'Open as' using a jpeg the file will open in the raw editor and you will be able to make adjustment but this means you are only working on a jpeg not the raw file.

    Re: RAW question

What did you use to transfer the files to your computer? It sounds like they got converted during the transfer. I use elements 11 but the editor only, not the organizer. If you used the organizer to transfer the files you might want to check the settings to see if that's the issue. Most definately if you just open them in the editor is does not convert them to jpg unless you do a "save as" and intentionally change to jpg.

    Hi Rita,

Yes, it is possible to have Elements convert your RAW files to jpeg. Check your "open as" settings under the file tab.

Ah hah. Now, that sounds like the answer (or, that sounds like it could be the problem).

    Re: RAW question

Sounds like Shadowman is on to it. To clarify, I don't use the ACR raw editor in PSE11. I do my RAW conversion in either ViewNX2 or Capture NX2 then open TIFF/JPEGs in PSE. Perhaps a meaningful detail...
