My phone is Samsung flip POS and the only photos I take with it are of the inside of my pocket ;-). If I'm out with my iPad 2 I'll take pix with it to keep entertained (such as when I was recently at jury duty; I still have to transfer them). Otherwise I prefer a real camera. I would probably feel differently if I had a smart phone but I am past the generation that feels the need to have one in their hand constantly... Incredible devices though, I agree.
OP Hope says, "once I am able to get a proper photo editing program". Download the free GIMP (PC/Mac) or Paint.net (PC) and have fun!
Unfortunately you have to practice with them and I find P.N easier to use than GIMPshop .... but perhaps that is becuase I am used to Paint Shop Pro which can be obtained for quite low prices on Amazon if you get a two or three year older version which will do much of what the latest version does .... ie x3 rather than x6 ... some call them 13 and 16, I started with 7.
My 2 cents (3 threads, shot with my cell phone). Cheers!

The only image that I have ever shot with a cell phone is a snapshot of an adopter with the rescue dog she adopted from us. I delivered the dog to her and had forgotten my camera. We always like to have pictures of our dogs with their new families. The iPhone filled in adequately!
In the January 2014 issue of Popular Photography (p.28) a reader "Most people are now taking photos with their smartphones...Professional photographers now routinely take an iPhone with them on assignments...even National Geographic photographer! Start publishing a monthly magazine pertaining to iPhone photography or devote a significant section in your magazine to this aspect."
Magazine's response: "We're not ready to launch a new magazine, but check out our smartphone gear, page 18."
Don't they already have Smartphone magazines? Why not ask those publishers to dedicate more space?

Time Magazine used an image captured with an iPhone on their front cover - many professional photographers would kill for that accolade.
I use the iPhone camera on a regular basis. Frequently at work I use it for documentation purposes. Since I almost always have it with me it also allows me to capture those moments when I've not got a more capable camera.
I set a reminder for the first of every month to take a picture at the same location on my commute to work. I've been taking them for over 3 years now; it's a fun collection. Here is one:
Sometimes you just get a unique sight in a commonplace setting such as this sun rise through steam:
And this one I took through a coffee shop window last night:

Or they understand that for normal publication sizes the output from an iPhone is perfectly good enough and a great photograph is a great photograph regardless of what it was taken with.
